SAN FRANCISCO— SF State finished in second place in the 10-team SF State Invitational this afternoon in Golden Gate Park's Speedway Meadows with 53 points. Benji Preciado led the Gators with a sixth place time of 25:32.5 while San Diego Mesa College's Steven Martinez won the 8K race with a time of 25:01.3.

"It was another tight battle with Humboldt State," said SF State head coach Tom Lyons. "They got out quicker than us but our guys closed over the second half of the race." "Bruk and Benji led the charge running great times and placing in the top 10. Ryan Woods and Logan Smith are running well now while Ryan Chio had a fantastic day as our fifth man."

This was a good result for us as we head into the postseason. We will continue to fine tune our team strategy as we look toward November and the 10k.

SF State finished just five points behind Humboldt State who captured the team title with 48 points in the 10-team race.

Finishing right behind Preciado was Bruk Assefa with a seventh place time of 25:32.9. The next two Gator runners to cross the finish line were Ryan Woods and Logan Smith. Woods finished in 14th place with a time of 26:07 and Smith had a time of 26:07.4.

Crossing the line in 24th place was Ryan Chico with a time of 26:25.8 followed by Harjit Randhawa (35th, 26:48.1) and Kurt Lutz (37th, 26:48.9).

Michael Garaventa finished in 54th place with a time of 27:23.2 while Will Zentmyer ran a 64th place time of 27:36.4.

After the invitational, the Gators held a brief ceremony recognizing its seniors in Bruk Assefa, Ryan Chio, Ryan Woods and Will Zentmyer.

SF State will return to the course on Saturday, October 19 as the Gators will participate in the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational. Then the following weekend, the Gators will participate in the CCAA Championships on Saturday, October 26 in Chico, Calif.
