Yale Bulldogs Break the Ice at Season Opener

Three Elis Win Their Events

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's track and field team competed in its first meet of the indoor season on Saturday at Coxe Cage. A number of area teams came to compete on Yale's historic oval, where the freshman class made its debut. Three Bulldogs conquered all in their respective events and the unscored meet gave the entire team a chance to gauge its performance thus far in the season.

Senior Michael Levine took first in the weight throw, with a toss of 57'8.25" (17.58m). His effort was more than ten feet farther than anyone else, as well as his best weight throw indoors since the 2011 season. Senior Michael Pierce won the one mile run, finishing in 4:25.38 to best the rest of the field by more than seven seconds. Additionally, junior James Shirvell was first in the 1,000-meter run in 2:26.57.

A number of freshmen also posted fantastic results. Brendan Sullivan was second in the pole vault with a leap of 14'9" (4.5m), which ties him for 14th on the Yale record list. Max Payson was second in the one mile run in 4:32.71). Adam Lundquist (Casa Grande HS, Petaluma) was also second in the 60-meter hurdles. He finished in 8.75 to edge sophomore Daniel Kemp (8.78) in third. Alexander McDonald, another freshman, was second overall and first in his heat in the 500-meter dash in 1:06.74.

Yale took second and third in the long jump; junior Dana Lindberg posted a leap of 22'4.25" (6.81m) and senior Tommy Winger jumped 21'5.25" (6.53m).

The Bulldogs had a lot of success in the short to middle distance events. Sophomore Michael Grace was third in the 800-meter run in 1:57.67, which is his fastest collegiate time in the event. Junior John Cocco was fourth in the 1,000-meter run in 2:35.18. In the 500-meter dash, sophomore Dylan Hurley placed fifth in 1:07.37 while junior Michele Gama Sosa was fourth in the one mile run in 4:37.59.

In the short sprints, senior Daniel Jones (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto) posted the highest result of the day with his fourth-place finish in the 60-meter dash. He finished in 7.13 to win his heat and automatically advance to the finals, where he remained consistent with a time of 7.12. Jones was also ninth in the 200-meter dash in 22.92. In the 400-meter dash, sophomore Mario Kranjac was fifth (51.24) and junior Nnamdi Udeh was seventh (51.28) after finishing first and second in their heat.

The Bulldogs will take a break from competition until the New Year, when they host the Yale Invitational on Jan. 12 at Coxe Cage.
