The 12 Best Moments for U.S. Distance Running in 2012

Medals, records, surprises and more; who produced the #1 moment?

By Ryan Lamppa, Running USA wire

Each year it gets harder and harder to select the 10 best moments in U.S. distance running. In the Olympic year of 2012, it is fitting to select 12 best moments as U.S. athletes and teams produced sterling, historic and medal winning performances on the roads, track and trails and in ultras. Although Kenya and Ethiopia have much more overall depth than the U.S., this country has the most diverse top talent in the world. As the top moments of 2012 indicate, the USA's decade-long distance running resurgence remains strong.

Here are the 12 Best Moments for U.S. Distance Running in 2012:

#12
Olson Obliterates Course Record at Western States 100 Mile
On June 23 at the Western States Endurance Run 100 Mile in Auburn, CA, Timothy Olson of Ashland, OR smashed the course record in 14 hours, 46 minutes, 44 seconds - the first sub-15 time at this grueling event. Men's runner-up Ryan Sandes was also under the previous record of 15:07:04 by Geoff Roes in 2010.

#11
Conley Closes Fast for Surprise Olympic Berth
At the Olympic Trials in Eugene, OR on June 28, UC-Davis grad Kim Conley, who was on nobody's pre-race 5000m favorites list, earned a trip to London with a stirring, crowd-roaring Hayward Field finish to nip Julia Lucas at the tape for the coveted third spot - 15:19.79 to 15:19.83. Conley's shocking performance was also a personal record.

2013 Road Runners Club of America Championship Calendar Announced

The RRCA Championship Event Series is one of the oldest distance running traditions in the US, dating back to 1958 when the RRCA awarded their first championship designation. The goal of the RRCA Championship Event Series is to shine a spotlight on well-run, community-based events, and to promote the sport of running by recognizing the top performing runners in the Open, Masters (40+), Grand Masters (50+), and Senior Grand Masters (60+) categories for both men and women as RRCA Champions.

In 2011, the RRCA Championship Event Series included 170 races at the State, Regional and National level that attracted over 265,000 runners nationwide, making it the largest grassroots-organized, running event series in the US. RRCA Championship Events receive sponsorship support from Gatorade as the Official Beverage of the series; Sports Authority as the Presenting Sponsor of the Series; Ashworth Awards a the Official Award Provider for the series; and Coolmax gifts for RRCA champions. 37th Marine Corps Marathon Achieves Historic Online and Social Media Reach

QUANTICO, Va. - The enthusiasm, intensity and energy of runners and spectators at the 37th Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) was the culmination of an effective and unparalleled online and social media community-building effort that reached a potential audience in excess of 11 million individuals following the Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012 event held in Arlington, Va., and the nation's capital. The comprehensive communication effort was anchored by a dynamic and inspiring Facebook page, an informative website - www.marinemarathon.com , an upgraded web-based navigational support application and a runner tracking service that provided instant updates of runners' times from the course via email or text message, over an individual's Twitter feed or on a participant's Facebook page.

The MCM's runner tracking service boasted more users-per-runner than any other event in the history of participatory sports and represented the largest penetration of messaging/social media ever for the service. More than 84,000 individuals registered for the program, which is an 83 percent increase over 2011, the year the service was first introduced at the MCM.
