9. Estevan De La Rosa, 11, Arcadia HS, Arcadia, CA
The talented junior, who had just a couple victories against many more losses, epitomized the stunning nature of the results of the NXN Finals mudbath. He ran a smart, measured effort to place second in 17:09. De La Rosa’s best triumph was in the Stanford seeded race and he was within a second of winning the Division 1 state and Southern Section crowns.
16. Bryan Fernandez, 12, Dos Pueblos HS, Goleta, CA
Although Fernandez struggled to 66th in the mud at NXN Finals, he had a breakout season to be proud of. It started with an unexpected win at Woodbridge and was followed by impressive triumphs at Clovis, in the Mt. SAC Division 1/Division 2 individual sweeps, the Southern Section Division 2 finals, and the state Division 2 finals.
23. John Lawson, 12, Sir Francis Drake HS, San Anselmo, CA
Seventeenth at Foot Locker West as a junior, Lawson moved up to third this year, and then was ninth with a superior effort in San Diego. He was also second at Division 4 state, fourth at Stanford, and won the Division 3 sweeps at Mt. SAC.
