Aggie men victorious in eight while the women pick up three and a school record
Chidinma Onyewuenyi set a school record in the hammer throw in her first meet of the season.
March 5, 2011
BERKELEY, Calif. - Chidinma Onyewuenyi broke her own school record in the hammer throw leading three wins from the Aggie women, while the men picked up victories in 11 events, as the UC Davis men's and women's track and field teams started strong at the Cal Opener at Edwards Stadium on Saturday.
Senior Ugo Eke, coming off a redshirt year last season, won the 400-meter event for the women who also captured up a victory in the 4x400. The men had six wins on the track and two more in the field, highlighting their day in the non-scoring event which also included Stanford, Cal Poly, the University of San Francisco and the host Bears.
The men received first-place finishes from senior Alex Wilright in the 400 (48.36), freshman Nathan Strum in the 1,500 (3:51.61), Robert Neely in the 110 high hurdles (15.41), Thomas Phillips in the 400 hurdles (52.57), Ray Green in the triple jump (49 feet, 1 inch) and Ethan Ostrom in the pole vault (16-2.75).
UC Davis also captured both the 4x100 (41.78) and 4x400 (3:16.12) relays.
Onyewuenyi broke her own school record in the shot put during the indoor portion of the Aggies' season this winter, and coming off a redshirt season in 2010, began her senior campaign with a winning throw of 192-9 in the hammer on Saturday. Her record effort came on her last attempt.
That mark is more than six feet further than her previous best of 186-06 set in 2009. Onyewuenyi had a busy afternoon on Saturday, also finishing second in the discus and third in the shot put.
Similarily, Eke had an impressive start to the season, taking first in the 400 in 55.91 before returning later in the meet to place second in the 200 in 24.85. She also ran a leg on the Aggies' long relay.
Sophomore Melanise Chapman was second in the 100 in 11.90, just off her shared school record of 11.86, for another strong effort on the track. Emily Bush tied her career-best - an No. 6-tying program mark - finishing
Wilright rarely runs the open 400 but holds the No. 2 position on the Aggies' all-time list and added a win in the event at Cal. Phillips, who combines with Wilright to provide a strong duo in the 400 hurdles, was an easy winner on Saturday in that event.
Strum had a memorable start to his UC Davis career in the 1,500. He was the only Aggie runner in the 18-competitor field but won his race by nearly a half-second over Marco Bertolotti of Stanford.
Two more freshmen - Marcus Johnson and Hosea Tate - also had winning efforts, running the first two legs on UC Davis' victorious short relay. They teamed with Neely and Kaio Sena.
Green led a 1-2 Aggie finish in the triple jump as teammate Igor Seriba (46-4.25) took second. UC Davis' pole vaulters did that finish one better, sweeping the top three spots with Ostrom followed by Josh Sandler (15-3) and Daniel Turvey (15-3).
Another highlight in the field events came from senior Brock Bennett who jumped from a tie for 10th on the program's javelin list to No. 6 with his impressive second-place throw of 195-08.
UC Davis will return to action next Saturday when it hosts the first of three meets this season with the Aggie Open at Woody Wilson Track. The meet brings together top collegiate and open competitors.
