DURHAM, N.C. - Former Duke All-America runner Sally Meyerhoff passed away on Tuesday in a cycling accident in Arizona. She was 27.
At Duke, Meyerhoff earned All-America honors in three disciplines - cross country (2004), 10,000-meters (outdoors; 2006) and 5,000-meters (indoors; 2007). In addition to claiming three ECAC individual championships, she captured the ACC cross country individual title in 2004 and received All-ACC accolades for cross country (2004 & 2005) and indoor track and field (2005). Meyerhoff also was a four-time indoor and outdoor All-East honoree.
Meyerhoff helped Duke to ACC and NCAA East Region cross country championships in 2004 and 2005 as well as a pair of NCAA top-five finishes (2nd in 2004 & 3rd in 2005). On Duke's all-time charts, she ranks among the leaders in the indoor 3,000-meters (5th; 9:19.88), indoor 5,000-meters (3rd; 16:11.57) and outdoor 10,000-meters (3rd; 33:30.12). She also was a part of Duke's school record-holding distance medley relay team (11:14.30 in 2005) with Meaghan Leon (Pacific HS, San Bernardino), Shannon Rowbury (Sacred Heart Cathedral, San Francisco) and Allison Stankavage and the school's top 4x1,500-meter relay team (17:45.20 in 2004) with Clara Horowitz (Piedmont HS), Leon and Rowbury.
Meyerhoff graduated from Duke with a degree in history in 2007.
An accomplished marathoner following her undergraduate career at Duke, Meyerhoff claimed championships at the 2009 USA 25-K in Grand Rapids, Mich., the 2010 More Magazine/Fitness Magazine Half-Marathon in New York and the 2010 P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon. She also qualified for last year's Ironman World Championship as an amateur.
