Hillsdale, Ill. – The Talley brothers and the Allen brothers won multiple titles for their families Sunday at the USATF National Youth Indoor Track & Field Championships held at Proviso West High School in Hillsdale, Ill.
Athletes in the Sub-bantam through Youth age divisions qualified through one of four youth zone championships by placing in the top six of their event. Athletes in the Intermediate and Young Men and Women’s age divisions were able to enter directly into the championships. Results from the zone championships can be viewed here.
Julian Talley and his older brother Myles swept the Sub-Bantam and Bantam Boys 55m races. Julian won the younger division in 8.93, and Myles was clocked in 8.11 to win the Bantam race. Eric Allen was the fastest competitor in the Midget division, winning in a time of 7.64. Jamal Leonard of the Firebirds Athletic Club won the Youth division in 7.07, and Bryon Vaughn of the Cambridge Jets won the Intermediate race in 6.89. In the fastest race of the day, Martin Tolentino won the Young Men’s title in 6.59.
Brooke Scullark improved her seed time by more than a second en route to her win in the Sub-Bantam Girls 55m in 9.69. Zoey Stone and Lorraine Boggs challenged each other in the Bantam Girls race, but Stone claimed the top spot as she beat Boggs to the line by one hundredth of a second in 8.38. In the Midget division Ava Thomas took top honors and improved her seed mark by half a second to win in 8.41. Sydney Fisher won the Youth Girls race in 7.43, Nia Dorner won the Intermediate division in 7.27 and Devanae Mitchell of the Northwest Track Club claimed the Young Women’s title in 7.32.
Julian Talley brought home his second championship medal in the Sub-Bantam 400m race with a winning time of 1:18.54. Ashton Allen was seeded fourth in the Bantam race; however, he improved by more than two seconds to win the title in 1:06.58. Austin Allen followed his younger brother’s lead and brought home another win for the family in the Midget Boy’s competition in 1:07.34. In the Youth Boy’s race Jamal Leonard of the Firebirds Athletic Club won in 55.93, Phillip Hayes won the Intermediate division in 53.75, and Ray Austin won the Young Men’s race in 53.76.
In the 400m races, Lauryn Heskin won the Sub-Bantam age-group in 1:17.62, Sierra Leonard won the Bantam race in 1:09.59 and Taliah Cintron ran a 1:06.62 to take the Midget title. In the Youth race, Rhyana Freeman won by two seconds to claim the national crown in 1:01.13, and Shamier Little won the Intermediate race in 1:01.18. Briana Quinnoes finished first in the Young Women’s race to win in 1:03.56.
Taliah Cintron ran away from the field in the Midget Girls 55m hurdles, and was the only athlete to break the 10-second barrier. Cintron won the national crown in a time of 9.89. In the Youth Girls race Sarah Taylor improved her seed mark by nearly a second to win in 9.56. After a false start in the Intermediate Girls race, Shamier Little ran to the win in 8.39. Kasha McDougald and Tierra Williams ran a close race in the Young Women’s hurdles, but McDougald was able break the tape first in 8.65 to win the national title.
In the boy’s hurdles, Tai Brown won his first national title of the day in the Midget division in 9.69 while Breon Murry took the crown in the Youth division in 8.38, and Scott Filip won the Intermediate title in 8.27. In the Young Men’s race, JaShawn Combs earned the national title in 7.63.
Lauryn Heskin won the Sub-Bantam 1,500m race and improved her seed time by 15 seconds to win in 5:34.85. In the Bantam division Ashley Rulison won in 5:38.04, and Gabrielle Wilkinson won the Midget race by a 22 second margin in 5:02.36. Nina Olshever of the Elgin Sharks Track Club won the Youth division in 5:10.92, while Rebekah Topham went undefeated in the championships with her win of 4:55.22 in the Intermediate race.
In the 200m races, the following athletes took first place: Sarai Ayarza, Sub-Bantam Girls, 34.93; Sierra Leornard, Bantam Girls, 30.07; Ava Thomas, Midget Girls, 32.55; Sydney Fisher, Youth Girls, 26.19; Nia Dorner, Intermediate Girls, 25.71, Cori Lemere, Young Women, 26.46; Julian Talley, Sub-Bantam Boys, 32.17; Myles Talley, Bantam Boys 28.49; Eric Allen, Midget Boys, 27.63; Jamal Leonard, Youth Boys, 24.56; Rio Chiba, Intermediate Boys, 24.41; Kelso Griffin, Young Men, 23.91.
The Elgin Sharks took the top four places in the Sub-Bantam 1500m race where Getsemani Aguirre won in 5:44.08. Demian Lofsnes-Scott won the Bantam race in 5:44.08, and Nicolas Arrivo of the Ann Arbor Track Club won the Midget division in 5:22. In a competitive Youth Boy’s race, seven runners came through the bell lap in a large pack, but Brayden Law used a strong kick to charge down the straightaway and claim first place in 4:40.49. In the Intermediate division, Glenn Lostritto unleashed a finishing kick with 100m to go to edge out Roy Hayes at the line and claim the national title in 4:23.22. Jordan Swate brought home the win in the Young Men’s race in a winning time of 4:41.18.
Deena Gibbs jumped to the lead on her second attempt in the Intermediate Girls’ long jump and protected her position with a leap of 4.53 on her third attempt to win the national crown. Scott Filip followed up his win in the hurdles with a winning jump of 6.47m/21-02.75 in the Intermediate Boy’s long jump. Kasha McDougald twice recorded a jump of 5.34m/17-06.25 to win the Young Women’s competition, and Zachery Ziemek won the Young Men’s long jump in 6.83m/22-05.00.
Mia Hyme won the Sub-Bantam Girl’s shot put with a mark of 2.36/7-09.00 to win the championship title. Eniya Driscoll heaved the shot put more than three feet further than her competitors in the Midget Girls age group to win the national crown with a mark of 6.52m/21-04.75. Lamar Hughes threw ten feet further than any other Bantam Boys to win his division in 7.26m/23-10.00. Jabari Bennett won the Midget Boy’s shot put in impressive fashion, as he threw nearly twice as far as him competitors to win the title with a toss of 12.73m/41-09.25.
Tai Brown won his second national title of the championships with a personal best in the high jump of 1.50m/4-11.00 to win the Midget Boy’s competition. Manuel Ayarza added to the 800m title he won during yesterday’s competition with a winning clearance of 1.20m/3-11.25 in the Bantam Boy’s High Jump. The Youth Boy’s High Jump saw five competitors fail to clear the bar, but Dorian Maddox of the Living Waters Athletics Team stood above the crowd and cleared 1.50m/4-11.00 to win the national title. Scott Filip also earned his second title of the day with his win by nearly a foot in the Intermediate competition with a mark of 1.85m/6-00.75. Kevin Spejcher had an outstanding day in the Young Men’s high jump as he bettered his seed mark five times with a final clearance of 2.00m/6-06.75.
In the triple jump, the following athletes hopped, skipped and jumped to national titles: Tarah Vijayasarathy, Youth Girls, 9.78m/32-09.5-0; Alicia Johnson, Intermediate Girls, 9.58m/31-05.25; Kasha McDougald, Young Women, 11.27m/36-11.75; Kyle Petrey, Youth Boys, 10.27m/33-08.50; Scott Filip, Intermediate Boys, 13.11m/43-00.25; Zachery Ziemek, Young Men, 14.06m/46-01.50.
In the relays, The Metropolis Track Club won the only 4x800m of the day by clocking 9:32.43 in the High School Men’s division. The Illinois Storm Track Club took home top-honors in the Bantam Girls 4x200m relay in 2:22.55, and The Cambridge Jets Youth Track Club won the Youth Girls 4x200m relay race in 1:46.41. The Michigan All Stars won both the Young Men and Women’s titles in the 4x200 in a time of 1:40.57 for the men and 1:47.82 for the women. The Living Waters Athletics Team won the title in the Bantam Boy’s 4x200 in 2:06.46.
2008 Olympic Bronze medalist and 2010 Jesse Owens Male Athlete of the Year, David Oliver presented awards and signed autographs at the championships. Video of Oliver getting advice from Midget champion Tai Brown can be viewed here.
