3 Bears Earn Invites to NCAA Track Indoors

Morrison, Suleman, Stokke to Represent Cal at National Meet

March 7, 2011

BERKELEY - A trio of Golden Bears - heptathlete Mike Morrison, triple jumper Hammed Suleman and pole vaulter Allison Stokke - has earned berths to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships and will compete at the national meet this weekend in College Station, Texas.

Morrison automatically qualified for NCAA's with his winning score of 5,694 points at the MPSF Championships late last month. The senior is currently ranked 11th in the country. Last year, Morrison also claimed the MPSF title, then set a school record when he finished third at the NCAA meet with 5,826 points. Outdoors, Morrison was the 2010 NCAA runner-up in the decathlon with a PR effort of 7,803.

Both Suleman, a sophomore, and Stokke, a senior, received at-large berths and will be making their first appearances at nationals. Suleman has surpassed 50 feet in the triple jump in each of his meets so far this season and set a PR with a leap of 52-10.75 to capture the MPSF title. The mark puts him ninth all-time at Cal in the event and is the longest for the Bears since the 1995 season.

Stokke earned her place on the entry list when she set a school indoor record in the pole vault Saturday at the UW Last-Chance Qualifier in Seattle, going over the bar at 13-11.75 and moving her up from 19th to a tie for 10th in the country. Her previous indoor best was 13-7.75, while her outdoor high is 13-9.25.

NCAA competition runs Friday and Saturday at the Rhonda & Frosty Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium on the Texas A&M campus. Morrison will be the only Bear in action Friday when he will take part in four of the heptathlon's seven events, beginning at 10 a.m. PT. On Saturday, Morrison again gets underway at 10 a.m., with the women's pole vault beginning at 2 p.m. and the men's triple jump at 2:30.
