INDIANAPOLIS – The new American Record holder in the women’s indoor shot put, Jillian Camarena-Williams has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the week after winning her seventh consecutive indoor U.S. title Sunday afternoon at the 2011 USA Indoor Track & Field Championships presented by BMW in Albuquerque, N.M.
Camarena-Williams’ toss of 19.87/65-02.25 broke the 24-year-old American record set by Ramona Pagel in 1987. Her mark was also good enough to move her to the top of the current world-standings lists and give her a new personal record, bettering her outdoor best of 19.50/63-11.75.
“I’m shocked! I’ve been training well, but you never expect that,” Camarena-Williams said. “Once they pulled the steel tape to verify the mark, it was a whirlwind. It was so fun!”
Reflecting on achievement, Camarena-Williams said, “I was excited to be named athlete of the week, with all of the amazing performances from last weekend with Jenny Simpson and Jenn Suhr. It is exciting for others to recognize my record. It was a shock.”
Winners: January 5, Bill Tribou; January 12, Tyler Sorensen; January 20, Josh Cox; January 26, Ben Shorey; February 2, Ashton Eaton; February 9, Ashton Eaton; February 16, Bernard Lagat; February 23, Ryan Crouser; March 2, Jillian Camarena-Williams
