Lea Wallace ran 2:05.42 to win the UW Invitational and set the fastest time in the nation.
SEATTLE & POCATELLO, Idaho — Sacramento State's Lea Wallace (Sr. Napa, Calif./Cal Poly)ran 2:05.42 in the women's 800 to record the fastest time in the nation by an NCAA Div. I student-athlete this season, Saturday at the UW Invitational.
Wallace, who was an All-American last season in the event, moved to the top of the national list despite running the event for the first time this season.
"We had to move Lea up to a slower heat because we had to catch a flight," Sacramento State distance coach Scott Abbott said. "She got off to a great start and really had to push herself throughout the race because she was so far ahead of the rest of the field.
"To run the fastest time in the nation under those circumstances shows that she belongs in the hunt for the national title."
Wallace was also the anchor leg for the Hornets' distance medley relay team on Friday night. The senior ran the mile leg of the race and helped the team shatter the school record with a time of 11:31.67. That mark is the fifth-best in Div. I this season.
The Napa, Calif., native was one of three runners to break 2:06 in the 800 at the meet. Wallace was joined by BYU's Lacey Bleazard (2:05.55) and Katie Palmer (2:05.91). However, both BYU runners were paired in the final heat which had the top-seeded student-athletes.
Prior to Wallace on Saturday, the top 800 time this season belonged to Tennessee's Chanelle Price who ran 2:056.1 on Friday at the Penn State National Invitational.
Along with Wallace, selected distance runners also competed at the UW Invitational. Sophomore Nathanael Litwiller (Concord, Calif./Clayton Valley HS) ran 1:51.91 in the men's 800 to record the second-fastest time in school history in the event.
The rest of the team competed at the Mountain States Games hosted by Idaho State. Junior Sam Schur (Santa Maria, Calif./St. Joseph HS)
continued his excellent performance in the heptathlon, finishing first and setting a school record with 5,291 points. Schur broke his own school record of 5,130 points and places him among the top 30 in Div. I in 2011.
The men had 11 other top 10 performances at the meet. Ronald Brookins finished first in both the 60 and the 60-hurdles. Brookins (Sr. San Diego, Calif./Helix HS)ran 6.89 in the 60 and 7.93 in the hurdles. Freshman Nick Taylor (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta HS)claimed the top spot in the triple jump with a leap of 46-11.75. That distance tied him for sixth in school history.
Freshman Evan Meehan (Novato, Calif./Novato HS)ran 6.89 seconds to place fourth in the 60 and fellow freshman Jordan Archie (Fr. Fair Oaks, Calif./Bella Vista HS)was second in the 200 (22.31).
The Hornet women had 17 top 10 performances at the Mountain States Games. Senior Andi Behring (Canyon Country, Calif./Canyon HS)finished first in the shot put for the second time in as many weeks with a put of 47-11.25. Sophomore Nicole McGlory (Hayward, Calif./James Logan HS) was also victorious in the triple jump with a leap of 39-08.00. McGlory was also third in the 60-hurdles after running 8.71.
Alcia Truesdale (Hayward, Calif./Tennyson HS)placed among the top three in three events. The junior was second in the 60 (7.73 seconds) and the 60-hurdles (8.66) and was third in the 200 (25.12). Her times in the 60-hurdles and 200 moved her into fifth place in school history in both events.
Sakya Bolton (Ontario, Calif./Colony HS)was third in the 60 (7.88) and fourth in the 60-hurdles (8.73).
Sacramento State returns to action on Feb. 12 at the Husky Classic in Seattle.
