Alison Greggor set a PR in the 3000 meters.

Jan. 29, 2011

SEATTLE, Wash. - Hammed Suleman captured two events - setting a PR in the triple jump and tying his indoor career best in the long jump - and Collin Jarvis went under 8 minutes to win the 3000 meters, pacing the Golden Bears on the second day of action of the UW Invitational.

Last week, Suleman became the first Cal triple jumper to surpass 50 feet since 2004, going 50-2.50 at the Cherry & Silver Invitational. But on Saturday, Suleman went more than a foot further with an effort of 51-5.75 on his fifth attempt. He added two other jumps over 50 feet during the day as well, going 50-6.25 on his second try and 51-4.25 on his sixth.

In the long jump, Suleman recorded to two best marks of any competitor on the day, opening at 24-2.25 and improving to 24-6.25 on his second attempt - a distance that matched his career indoor best from last year.

Jarvis prevailed in a close 3000 race as the top three finishers all crossed the line within a second of each other. Jarvis came through in 7:59.85, just ahead of Scott Smith (8:00.24) and Nathan Ogden (8:00.55). The time was a PR by nearly 15 seconds and moved Jarvis into fifth on Cal's all-time performer list.

Alison Greggor ran a lifetime best by 10 seconds in the women's 3000, taking third in 9:26.58. Only teammate Deborah Maier, who did not compete in Seattle, has run a faster time for the Bears since 1997.

Three members of the squad collected runner-up honors on the day, starting with Patrick Kowalsky, who was second in the shot put with a mark of 54-7.50. Brian Carmichael cleared 6-11 in the high jump for an indoor PR (he jumped 7-0.25 outdoors last May), while Allison Stokke made it over the pole vault bar at 13-5.75, better than any effort last year and only 1.25 inches shy of her indoor best.

Mike Morrison PR'd in the 1000 meters with a time of 2:42.24, but couldn't overcome a deficit he accumulated Friday and placed third in the heptathlon with 5,490 points. Washington's Jeremy Taiwo won with a score of 5,746 and Oregon's David Klech was second with 5,685.

Cherrelle Garrett took third in the 60 meters in a season-best time of 7.53 seconds, while she was fourth in the 200 in a season-best 24.76. Freshman Chioma Amaechi continued with a strong start to her Cal career by finishing third in the shot put at 48-5.50 and eighth in the weight throw at 56-0.50.

The Bears will take a week off before returning to Seattle for the Husky Classic Feb. 12.
