Rose Monday is in her fifth season at UTSA, where she oversees the distance programs.
In four seasons in San Antonio, Monday has helped revitalize the Roadrunners’ distance program. She led the women’s cross country team to a third-place finish at the 2004 Southland Conference Championships, the program’s best showing since finishing second in 1999, and has guided Ashley McDonald, Rita Lambert and Veronica Silva to all-conference honors over the past two seasons.
McDonald (2004 Cross Country) and Meghan Chance (2004 & 2005 Indoor Track and Field) have been named SLC Women’s Student-Athletes of the Year, while Leticia Cerna (indoor mile), Letitia Gilkes (indoor 800m), Larry Brooks (outdoor 800m) and the indoor distance medley relay team won SLC crowns in 2004. Cerna and the women’s sprint medley relay team also broke school records during the season.
Monday enjoyed immediate success in her first season with the Roadrunners tutoring the 4x800m relay team that won Texas Relays with a school-record time of 8:45.37. The foursome was then invited to the Penn Relays where they broke their own record with an 8:42.19 clocking.
Monday also guided Cerna and Katie Poindexter to 2002 All-SLC performances. Cerna was All-SLC in the 5,000m run and the 3,000m steeplechase, while Poindexter earned league honors in the 800m and 1,500m runs. In 2003, Poindexter won the SLC Outdoor crown in the 800m.
Nationally-known as one of the top minds in middle distance and distance running, Monday was appointed Chair of Development for Distance Runners in the United States by USA Track & Field in 2003. She was an assistant coach for the U.S. contingent to the 2005 World University Games in Izmir, Turkey, and recently was named head women’s coach for Team USA at the 2006 IAAF World Junior Championships in Beijing, China.
A member of three national championship relay teams at Cal State Northridge, Monday has a long list of running credentials highlighted by qualifying for the 1996 Olympic Trials in Atlanta, Ga.
A 1985 national indoor champion in the 800m, Monday won the master’s world championship gold medal in Australia in 2001. She was ranked in the top 10 in the U.S. in the 800-meters from 1983-92 and competed in four Olympic Trials. She was also ranked in the 1,500-meter run for four years.
In 2004, Monday won the Masters (ages 40+) 800m at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Sacramento, Calif.
Monday began her coaching career in 1990 at St. Bernard (Calif.) High School, before moving to San Antonio in 1999. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science from Cal State Northridge in 1981.
