California's indoor track & field season got underway Friday night with 18 Golden Bears seeing action on the opening night of the Cherry & Silver Invitational. Five athletes made their Cal debuts, including freshman Charnell Price, who sprinted to a time of 24.61 in the women's 200 meters.

The Bears' strongest performances came in the women's weight throw, where Linda Oseso and Kiely Smith both set PRs. Oseso placed second in flight 2 with a best of 57-9.75, while Smith was right behind with her effort of 56-9.50. Freshman Chioma Amaechi also unleashed a throw of 48-2.50.

Price, who was fourth in her section, led three Cal runners in the women's 200. Kayla Dixon (25.19) and Cherrelle Garrett (25.14) also competed for the Bears.

On the men's side, Hammed Suleman paced five Bears in the long jump with his mark of 23-11.00. Chase Wheeler added an indoor PR of 23-2.50 (better than his 22-5.00 from last season), while Mike Morrison also surpassed the 23-foot distance at 23-2.00. Freshman Taylor Kientzel-Means (22-10.50) and sophomore Chad Jones (22-5.25) added to Cal's results.

The other two Bears to don the Blue & Gold for the first time were men's high jumpers Nick Ridge (6-6.25) and Idarre Coles (6-4.25). Senior Brian Carmichael also leapt 6-6.25 during the competition.

The invitational resumes Saturday morning with field events starting at 10 a.m. and track events beginning at 11 a.m.
