Thousands of J.O. Cross Country athletes vie for national titles Saturday in Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE -- The USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships return to Balloon Fiesta Park on Saturday, Dec. 12, as more than 3,000 athletes compete for age-group national titles.

Athletes competing in six, two-year age divisions will range from 8 & under boys and girls to 17-18 young men and women, as races crown individual male and female champions in a total of 12 races.

Alexi Pappas (Eugene, Oregon), champion of the 2015 AJC Peachtree Road Race and a member of the Nike Oregon Track Club, will be the keynote speaker at Friday night’s opening ceremony. Pappas is a five-time All-American, who was a part of two NCAA Championship teams. She collected 10, top-10 finishes in 2015. She is a graduate of Dartmouth College and the University of Oregon, and she is in post-production on her second feature film entitled “TrackTown.”

Returning from 2014 JO Cross Country Championships on the boys side are 8 & under reigning champion Shawn Woodall and 9-10 boys podium topper Espen Lehnst. In the girls 11-12 age group against a field of 314, Aidyn Woodall looks to win her third-straight title.

The largest field of the day will be the 13-14 young men’s race, which includes 356 athletes and 29 teams entered. Team scoring is divided into five divisions for boys and five divisions for girls with the athlete’s year of birth determining the division in which he or she competes.
