Howard Women’s Track Gets Off To Great Start
Annapolis, MD--The women's track and field program got off to a hot start on Wednesday at their first indoor meet of the season when they visited the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.
Dominique Bynum-Cooper (Newark, NJ) started the day off with her first collegiate victory in the shot put with an indoor personal best throw of 13.49 meters (44'3.25"). Her training partner, Cheyenne Bellerand (Emerson, NJ) finished second with a throw of 13.39 meters.
"The throw squad continues to impress; that's one group that I can always count on to show up!" said head coach Harrison.
Continuing in the field events, Hanah Billups (Atlanta, GA) finished second in the long jump as she looks to maintain her status as one of the top athletes in the MEAC (she won the silver medal in the Pentathlon and Heptathlon last season).
As the action began on the track, Tahirah Dickenson (Kingston, Jamaica) finished 4th with a MEAC qualifying time of 9.02. "She missed the entire indoor season with a torn MCL last year; It's good to see her run well on the first day back, noted Harrison."
The highlight of the day could have been the 500 meter dash. Michelle Cole (Kingston, Jamaica) closed the gap and out leaned the runner from Mount Saint Mary's University to win the event in dramatic fashion.
Freshman Aliyah Hale (Los Angeles, CA) was not far behind finishing 4th in the same event.
Overall the Bison had nine Top 5 performances on the day, including third place in the 4x400 meter relays with a team of Cole, Hale, Aigner Bobbitt (Maplewood, NJ) and Uchechi Unouha (Yardley, PA) and second place in the 4x800 meter relay with a team of Jade Hardy (Oakland, CA), Jasmine Hardy (Oakland, CA), Simone Counts (Plainsboro, NJ), and Joppa Banks (Evanston Township, IL).
Concluded Harrison. "It was a great way to open the season. We are very young and they needed this type of meet to understand how to compete on this level."
NEXT UP: The Bison will be off for the next month and will resume competition on January 9, 2016 at the George Mason Invitational in Fairfax, VA.
