INDIANAPOLIS -- Distance athlete Kevin Castille earns USATF Athlete of the Week after a top Masters finish Saturday at USATF Club Cross Country National Championships in San Francisco.

A traditional Master of the roads, Castille (Lafayette, Louisiana) took Saturday’s race out with the field, remaining conservative on unfamiliar terrain. Nearing the 1 km mark and as competitors settled in, he never wavered, maintaining 4:55 pace to gain a significant advantage and the Masters title in 31:00, more than a half minute ahead of the runner up.

“I did what I typically do and it turned out pretty well,” he said. “It showed my fitness is coming along how I thought it was, and I felt pretty good.”

Castille was the Masters champion at the 2015 AJC Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta with his 30:38 finish on July 4. He also finished second to Meb Keflezighi at USATF Masters Half Marathon Championships in San Diego, where he clocked 01:04:45.

“If you think about all the U.S. athletes we have in the country, I am actually shocked,” said Castille of his USATF Athlete of the Week recognition. “It’s a pretty good honor because we have thousands of athletes, and it’s always good to see that your hard work is noticed sometimes.”

Castille next competes at the Jacksonville Bank Marathon on Jan. 3, when he aims for a half marathon finish under 1:05:00 to qualify for U.S. Olympic Trials - Marathon on Feb. 13, 2016.

Other notable performances of the week are as follows:

Aidyn Woodall (Castle Rock, Colorado) won her third straight National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championship, this time capturing the 11-12 girls age group in 10:52. She had a lead of 13 seconds.

Sonja Friend-Uhl (Brentwood, Tennessee) won the masters women’s 6 km at USATF Club Cross Country National Championships in San Francisco with her 21:59 finish, seven seconds ahead of the runner-up.

Garrett Heath (Seattle) won the men’s individual title at USATF Club Cross Country National Championships in 29:06 at 10 km.

Amy Van Alstine won the individual women's title at USATF Club Cross Country National Championships after she surged over the final 200 meters of the 6 km to win by a single second in 19:51.

Now in its 14th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
