Fall 2015 Academic All-Ivy League Selections Announced
NEW YORK - Five men and five women student-athletes have been named Academic All-Ivy League selections for the Fall of 2015 as announced by league officials today.
Men's soccer, men's cross country and the women's volleyball each had a pair of selections while football, field hockey, women's soccer and women's cross country each had one represented.
In order to be eligible for the Academic All-Ivy League squad, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or key reserve on his or her team.
On the men's side, four seniors and one junior were represented. Seniors Kyle Jackson and Antonio Matarazzo of the men's soccer team and Aubrey Myjer and Tait Rutherford of the men's cross country team as well as junior Cameron Nizialek of the football team received the honors.
Named second team All-Ivy, Matarazzo was a big leader for Columbia on the pitch this year, picking up a game-winning goal against Princeton earlier this season while Jackson led the Lions in net, posting up a career-low .860 GAA after recording seven shutouts for a 10-5-1 record to earn All-Ivy League Honorable Mention accolades.
Myjer earned first team All-Ivy League Cross Country honors this year after finishing third overall at the Ivy League Championships while Rutherford picked up second team All-Ivy honors after a ninth place finish and later went on to place ninth at the NCAA Northeast Regional and 140th overall at the NCAA Championships.
Rounding out the men's side was Nizialek who finished second in the Ivy League and 15th in the NCAA with a 42.9-yard punting average and was named both a STATS FCS National Special Teams and Ivy League Special Teams Player of the Week on Nov. 2.
On the women's side, three juniors and a senior represented the Lions in the honor. Senior Christina Freibott earned the academic honor after an impressive athletic year for the Lions, picking up Longstrength/NFHCA First Team All-Mideast Region and Unanimous First Team All-Ivy League honors after posting up 35 points to become Columbia's all-time points leader with 99.
Senior Cadie Naquin picked up the honors after serving as a leader on the back line for the Lions, starting in all 16 games while leading the defense to five shutouts this season.
Named the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year and a second team All-Ivy League selection, junior Cassie Wes played in all 56 sets as Libero for the Lions, finishing the year ranked 38th in the nation and atop the conference with a 4.93 digs per set average. Joining Wes from the volleyball team was junior Zoe Jacobs who led the team with a 2.82 kills per set average this season, playing in 50 of the team's 56 sets while averaging 0.58 digs and 0.48 blocks per set as the team's co-captain.
Rounding out the women's side was junior Natalie Tanner of the women's cross country team who led the Lions with a 14th-place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional and took fifth at the IC4A/ECAC Championship.
