STORRS, Conn. – Lisa Misipeka, a three-time Olympian and 11-time NCAA All-American, has been named assistant coach/director of operations for the UConn women’s track and field program, as announced by head coach J.J. Clark on Wednesday.
At UConn, Misipeka will coach the throwers and coordinate many operational functions for the program, including organization of team travel, budget management and preparation of student-athlete practice schedules.
“I’m excited to welcome Lisa to our staff,” said Clark. “She brings a wealth of experience and skill and I look forward to her working alongside associate head coach Clive Terrelonge and myself as we continue to work to bring the program to the next level.”
Misipeka comes to Storrs after serving as an assistant coach at Fresno State since 2008. During her time with the Bulldogs, she was involved in both recruiting and financial planning and also served as the head strength and conditioning coach for throwers. She has produced a pair of All-Americans and took over 20 athletes to the NCAA West Regionals.
Prior to her time at Fresno State, Misipeka made coaching stops at Northern Arizona (2000-01) and West Los Angeles College. In her two seasons at NAU, she guided four student-athletes to the NCAA National Championships.
“I have always thought of the day I'd represent a brand as nationally recognized and respected as UConn,” said Misipeka. “With great appreciation, I am excited to join forces with a coach as highly decorated as J.J. Clark. Today is a great day for me as my thoughts and dreams become a reality.”
Competing as a thrower at the University of South Carolina, Misipeka was a two-time NCAA Champion, winning the national crown in the hammer throw and 20-pound weight throw in 1998. She picked up 11 All-America nods and three SEC titles over her four-year career and set the school record for the hammer throw (65.00m). Off the field, she was honored as a five-time Academic All-American and was inducted into both the Gamecock and SEC Hall-of-Fame.
Following her stellar collegiate career, she trained with USC throws coach Dan Lange, earning a bronze medal in the hammer throw at the World Championships in 1999 and championed various international meets en route to her appearance at the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympics. At the 2004 games, held in Athens, Greece, she served as the flag bearer from American Samoa.
Misipeka is a member of NACWAA and is an appointed member of the President’s Commission of Human Relations and Equity.
Misipeka earned a bachelor’s in education from the South Carolina in 1998 and received her master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 2014.
