Collegians Well-Represented in Track & Field News Preseason Outdoor USATF Formchart

NEW ORLEANS – A number of collegiate track & field stars permeate the first Track & Field News USATF formchart released this week, which is an attempt to predict the finishing order of the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships and potential IAAF World Outdoor Championships team bids.

A total of 73 collegians – 37 men and 36 women – appeared on the list, which lists down through the top 10 in each event, including three women projected at No. 1 in Colorado steeplechaser Emma Coburn, Arizona high jumper Brigetta Barrett and Kansas triple/long jumper Andrea Geubelle; and Texas A&M javelin throwerSam Humphreys for the men.

Ten others – six women and four men – are projected to finish in the top three of their events, which would qualify them for the IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Moscow, Russia, so long as they have attained the World "A" standard in their events.

The projections are based on past performances, and are subject to change as the outdoor season, still very much in its 2013 infancy, continues to develop.

Coburn enters as the defending American champion in the steeple chase after winning at the USA Olympics Trials last summer and going on to finish 9th in London. In limited indoor action this season she claimed the NCAA title in the mile and became the second woman in collegiate history to run multiple sub-4:30 miles in the same season.

Barrett finished runner-up at the Trials, but returned home from England with an Olympic silver medal. She won her fifth consecutive NCAA high jump title with a crown at the indoor championships.

Geubelle finished third in the trials triple jump, but did not qualify for the Olympics without a mark that met the "A" standard. She enters the outdoor season as the long jump and triple jump champion indoors.

Humpreys of Texas A&M won the Trials javelin competition last season, but despite his American champ status he did not meet the qualifying mark for the Olympics. He is the current NCAA leader.

Four more collegians appear at No. 2 in their respective events, including 2012 Olympians seniors Erik Kynard of Kansas State Georganne Moline of Arizona in the 400 hurdles. Kynard, a two-time NCAA Champion, claimed the silver medal at the Olympics after finishing runner-up at the Trials, while Moline finished runner-up at the Trials and went on to finish fifth in London.

Oklahoma senior Tia Brooks, the defending outdoor and two-time indoor champ in the shot put, is No. 2 in her event. She finished third at the 2012 Trials to qualify for the Olympics, where she finished 19th overall. Brooks leads a group of five collegians who appear in the shot put projections, the highest representation of any event group on the formchart.

Dartmouth junior Abbey D’Agostino, the defending outdoor 5,000 and indoor 3000/5000 champ, is No. 2 at 5000 meters after finishing fifth at the Trials last season.

Also projected at No. 3 and in qualifying position, assuming the achievement of an "A" standard either before or during the USA Outdoor Championships, are LSU senior Kimberlyn Duncan – the reigning winner of The Bowerman – at 200 meters, Clemson junior Brianna Rollins in the 100 hurdles and Colorado steeplechaser Shalaya Kipp. The men slotted at No. 3 include sophomore pole vaulter Sam Kendricks of Ole Miss, indoor long jump champ sophomore Marquis Dendy of Florida and junior decathlete Kevin Lazas of Arkansas.
