Arizona Women Beat ASU and NAU
The UA women were victorious over ASU and NAU while the men fell to ASU but beat NAU.
Tempe, Ariz. - The University of Arizona Wildcat men's and No. 3 women's track and field teams competed in the annual UA-ASU-NAU Double Dual meet on Saturday at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. The UA women were victorious over Arizona State with a score of 102-87 and victorious over Northern Arizona with a score of 113-58. The Arizona men fell to Arizona State, 118-79 but beat Northern Arizona 104-66.
In the women's high jump competition, senior Brigetta Barrett tied her season-best mark of 6-4.25 (1.94m) and earned a first-place finish. That mark is still tops in the country and the world. She has now won 23-straight collegiate competitions and set the collegiate record for dual/triangular meets. Barrett also ran the 400-meter race in 55.04, a personal-best time that was good for fifth place. In the men's high jump, senior Edgar Rivera-Morales tied a personal-best mark with his clearance of 7-5.75 (2.28m). That mark is No. 3 in the country this year and is tied for No. 2 in UA history.
Sophomore Baillie Gibson set a personal-best mark of 204-1 (62.22m) in the women's hammer throw competition, good for second place overall. That mark is the third-best in UA history and No. 15 in the country, excluding results from around the country. On the men's side, senior Tyler Johnson also took second place with a season-best toss of 206-6 (62.94m). In the women's discus, junior Julie Labonté posted a personal-best mark of 178-6 (54.42m) and took second place. Senior Alyssa Hasslen finished in third place with a season-best toss of 173-5 (52.86). Gibson took fourth place and threw 172-1 (52.47m). In the women's javelin competition, senior Asia Easley won with a toss of 144-11 (44.18m). Junior Amber Passalaqua, a heptathlete, posted a personal-best mark of 107-2 (32.67m). In the women's shot put, Labonté won with a toss of 56-10 (17.32m). Hasslen took second place with a toss of 56-2.5 (17.13m). Gibson took fourth place with a mark of 54-7.25 (16.64m). Junior Omotayo Talabi had a mark of 52-0 (15.85m), good for fifth place.
Senior Georganne Moline clocked a season-best time of 54.94 in the 400-meter hurdles, good for first place overall. That time is also a collegiate record for all dual/triangular meets in history. Senior Clifton Leake won the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.98. Junior Neil Houlihan clocked a personal-best time of 53.65 and took third place.
The women's 4x100-meter relay team took first place with a time 45.0. ASU's women were the only other team in the race but they were disqualified at the exchange between the second and third runner. The quartet of freshman Traci-Lynn Hicks, junior Shapri Romero, junior Tamara Pridgett and junior Germe Poston got the victory for Arizona. In the women's 100-meter hurdles, Hicks set a personal-best time of 13.89 and took second place. In the 400-meter run, Pridgett clocked a personal-best time of 54.41, good for third place. Poston won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.62 and Romero took third with a time of 11.82. In the 200-meter dash, Romero clocked a time of 23.51; the second-best time of her career was good for first place. Poston took third place with a time of 23.98. The women's 4x400-meter relay of Romero, Garland, Pridgett and Moline clocked a season-best time of 3:32.56, the No. 10 time in the country. Moline clocked a 400-meter split of 50.94.
In the men's 1,500-meter race, junior Lawi Lalang made his season debut with a victory in the 1,500-meter race. He clocked a time of 3:41.52, the No. 8 time in the country this year and the fastest time in UA-ASU-NAU Double Dual history. He also won the 5,000-meter race with a time of 13:40.85, the No. 6 time in the country this year. On the women's side, freshman Nicci Corbin won with a time of 4:29.90. Senior Jen Bergman took second place with a time 4:32. 34 and freshman Hanna Peterson set a personal-best time of 4:35.48 and took third place. In the 800-meter run, Corbin took third place and posted a time of 2:14.03. Bergman won the 5,000-meter race with a time of 16:59.42, a meet record. On the men's side, senior James Eichberger won with a time of 1:52.14 in his season debut of the 800-meter race.
The men's 4x100-meter relay squad consisting of sophomore Thomas Moronta, freshman Bernard Dickerson-Quinn, sophomore Mohammad Alhasan and Leake clocked a time of 40.40, good for second place. Dickerson-Quinn clocked a personal-best time of 46.45 in the 400-meter run, good for No. 7 in UA history. In the 100-meter dash, Moronta clocked a personal-best time of 10.79 and took fourth place. Alhasan also clocked a personal-best time of 10.80 and finished in fifth place. In the men's 4x400-meter relay, the quartet of junior Sean Delfani, freshman Siraaj Ghori, Jani and Dickerson-Quinn clocked a season-best time of 3:09.10. Dickerson-Quinn anchored with a 400-meter split of 44.9.
"Another in-state, great rivalry meet," head coach Fred Harvey said. "We saw some fantastic marks happen here and it was a big fight from our team that you want to see going into the conference championship. All the ladies did a fantastic job. They came together and they fought really well. As we go forward, we're trying to get the team excited about the championships. We're building going into the Pac-12 Championships and it's a great day to be a Wildcat out here in Sun Devil land."
