Five meet records broken at 18th annual track meet
STANFORD, Calif. – University of Colorado’s Emma Coburn broke a meet and stadium record to highlight performances at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational track and field meet at Cobb Track and Angell Field on Sunday.
Coburn, an American and 2012 Olympic finalist, won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:28.26 and was among four athletes to run world-leading outdoor times for this year. Coburn’s time was the fastest by eight seconds and was among five meet records set.
Others world-leading times during the 18th annual meet that traditionally showcases distance running, were run by Canadian Matt Hughes in the men’s steeplechase in a meet record 8:21.34, Australian Ben St. Lawrence in the men’s 10,000 (27:37.55), and American Ben True in the men’s 5,000 (13:14.44).
Besides Coburn and Hughes, meet records were set by Treniere Moser in the women’s 1,500 (4:06.40) and a pair of British hammer throwers -- Sophie Hitchon (231-5) for the women and Mark Dry (241-11) for the men.
For Stanford, Amy Weissenbach provided the team highlight by winning the women’s 800 in 2:04.24, breaking the school freshman record held by Regina Jacobs since 1982 (2:04.38) and moving her to No. 2 on Stanford’s all-time performance list.
