Statement from Boston Athletic Association
BOSTON - (Monday, April 15, 2013) - The Boston Athletic Association extends its deepest sympathies to all those who were affected in any way by today's events.

Today is a sad day for the City of Boston, for the running community, and for all those who were here to enjoy the 117th running of the Boston Marathon. What was intended to be a day of joy and celebration quickly became a day in which running a marathon was of little importance.

We can confirm that all of the remaining runners who were out on the course when the tragic events unfolded have been returned to a community meeting area.

At this time, runners bags in Boston that remain unclaimed may be picked up by runners presenting their bib number or proof of race participation at Berkeley Street, between St. James and Boylston, in downtown Boston.

At this time, we are cooperating with the City of Boston, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and all federal law enforcement officials.

We would like to thank the countless people from around the world who have reached out to support us today.

Desisa, Jeptoo Win Boston Marathon

BOSTON - Prior to a horrific act of violence that rocked the world and the running community, Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia and Rita Jeptoo of Kenya ran to championships on a chilly April morning in the 117th running of the Boston Athletic Association's Boston Marathon. Desisa, of Ethiopia, took the men's title in two hours, 10 minutes, 22 seconds. Jeptoo, of Kenya, was a repeat winner in the women's race. Her previous Boston win was in 2006. She finished in 2:26:25.
American Jason Hartmann recorded another strong Beantown performance, repeating his fourth place standing from 2012. He ran 2:12:12, off his personal best of 2:11:06 but more than two minutes faster than his 2012 Boston time. Defending champion Wesley Korir was fifth.
The elite American women were led by U.S. Olympian Shalane Flanagan, making her debut Boston appearance not far from the town of Marblehead, Mass., where she was raised. Flanagan finished fourth in 2:27:08. Fellow Olympian and training partner Kara Goucher was sixth in 2:28:11.
Flanagan was openly disappointed not to reach the podium.
"What we all dream about as athletes is winning and Kara and I really wanted to win this for everyone, especially people who have supported me here," she told a local TV station. "I really wanted to thank them and I was hoping a laurel wreath was the way to thank them."
Recording an impressive performance in the women's race was the legendary Joan Benoit Samuelson, 55, a member of the Running USA Hall of Champions. Samuelson, who was attempting to run within 30 minutes of her 2:22:43 here in 1983, which was then a world record. She finished in 2:50:37.
Samuelson reacted to the tragic events that unfolded later on Monday at the race's finish line.
"Prayers to those in the closely knit running community near and far," she said on her Twitter account.

National Run a Mile Days to Move Youth Across America

BETHESDA, Md. - The
American Running Association (ARA) will host and promote its National Run a Mile DaysTM from May 3-12, the Maryland=based national nonprofit announced. "R U A MILER" will be the rallying cry at elementary and middle schools across the U.S. for the sixth annual national campaign. The Mile is the standard measure in America and has been the indicator of fitness in running and track for decades. ARA is supported by its professional division of physicians and allied health professionals who have fundraised to support the national effort to increase the fitness and physical activity levels of America's youth.

"The 'R U A MILER' focus is intended to get more of our youth motivated and enthused to run," said ARA's Executive Director Dave Watt. "The Mile is a good test and a great first step."
Track & field and distance running have shown increases in youth participation in recent years. This Miler campaign is American Running's effort to spur additional participation. In addition, ARA will promote efforts to make the Mile the standard mid-distance race in high school replacing the 1600 meters (high school) as led by the Bring Back the Mile campaign.

Locals Win Transamerica Rock 'n' Roll San Francisco Half Marathon
SAN FRANCISCO - (April 7, 2013) - A cool fog settled over Aquatic Park as the inaugural
Transamerica Rock 'n' Roll San Francisco Half Marathon took off, meandering along a stunningly scenic course including an invigorating run across the Golden Gate Bridge and a waterfront finish on Sunday morning.

Ideal running weather helped propel runners up the hills of San Francisco and across the finish line. Local runner
Chris Mocko, 27, led the men's field in 1 hour, 16 minutes, 59 seconds, beating
Peter Birney of Walnut Creek by nearly two minutes. After a rough recent bout of training, Mocko said he was surprised and pleased to take the win in his hometown."My goal today was just to survive so it's nice to get some momentum for the season. It was a beautiful day - I should have run ten minutes faster with the weather. The crowds were great too and all the cheering and music really helped me across the bridge."

Twenty-five-year-old Tim Cole came in third, finishing in 1:20:13.On the women's race,
Elle Pishny, 27, was the only female in sight, running alongside the lead men. Finishing fourth overall, the San Francisco local won in 1:20:30. As she crossed the Golden Gate Bridge, runners on the other side were cheering her on.
