Price Is Right for Bears at Brutus Hamilton Invitational

Junior Sets PRs in 100m and 200m, Runs on 4x100 Relay Winner

Charnell Price

April 27, 2013

BERKELEY - Continuing an outstanding spring season, Charnell Price moved up on Cal's all-time lists in both the 100 and 200 meters and helped the Bears' winning 4x100-meter relay to a season-best time at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational Challenge Saturday at Edwards Stadium.

Price sprinted to a lifetime best in winning the 100 meters in 11.60, a time that pushed her to third on Cal's all-time performer list. A short time later, she recorded another PR in the 200 meters. Although she came up a step short to Karene King (unattached) at the finish, Price did take second in 23.60, making her fifth on the school's career list in the event. Her best this season had been 23.91, while her previous PR was 23.74.

Price started the day by running the second leg of the 4x100-meter relay to help the Bears to a season-best time of 45.15. She was joined on the relay by Carisma Lyday, Esther Higgwe and Alima Kamara. Saturday's results come just a week after Price won the 100 and 200 meters at the Big Meet against Stanford.

"Charnell's on fire," director of track & field Tony Sandoval said. "Last year, she fought some injuries and only came on at the very end at Pac-12's. She's done a good job this year from start to finish."

The Cal men's quartet of Julius Travis, Tom Blocker, Dash Oliver and Ray Stewart also set a season-best in the 4x100-meter relay by finishing 40.05 - the Bears' fastest time in more than a dozen years. The result ranks No. 23 in the country so far this season, as well as No. 3 in the Pac-12.

Cal's Malaina Payton and New Mexico graduate Alesha Walker staged a back-and-forth battle in the women's long jump, with the lead changing hands four times. Payton recorded a mark of 20-11.25, her second-farthest distance of the season, on her fifth attempt. But Walker came through on her next try with her winning effort of 21-4.25. Payton entered the meet ranked fourth among all collegians after jumping a PR 21-1.50 at last week's Big Meet.

The Don Bowden Mile, named for the former Cal runner who was the first American under four minutes in 1957, was won by the Bears' Jordan Locklear, who finished in 4:04.18, which ranks as the No. 4 collegiate outdoor time at the distance this season.

In the women's 400-meter hurdles, Tiarra Pittman pulled away down the homestretch and broke one minute for the first time in her career, winning in 59.93 to lower her PR by almost 1.5 seconds. Freshman Randy Bermea followed in the men's 400 hurdles to prevail over four challengers in 52.33.

In the men's high jump, former Golden Bear Brian Carmichael, who completed his collegiate eligibility during the most recent indoor season, cleared 7-2.50 to edge Cal junior Nick Ridge, who was second at 7-1.50.

Ethan Cochran nipped teammate Chijoke Nwuzi to claim the men's discus with a mark of 179-6, which came on his fifth attempt. Nwuzi, who set a PR on the day, led at that point with a best of 178-4 from his third throw but he could not overcome Cochran on his final throws.

Wisconsin's Japheth Cato set a meet record in the men's long jump after going 25-8.75 on his final attempt. The mark makes him the No. 9 performer in the country this season. Cato later won the pole vault at 17-5.75.

In other notable results, Golde Ibia set a PR in the women's 100-meter hurdles final, running 14.15; Torie Owers won the women's shot put with a mark of 49-1.50; and Kamara cruised to victory in the 400 meters in 54.10 seconds.

Cal will be in action again on Sunday at the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford before the Pac-12 Championships get underway in May.
