Big Sur International Marathon Kicks Off Weekend of Events, Honoring Boston

CARMEL, Calif. - The 2013 Big Sur International Marathon kicks off this weekend with a two day Health & Fitness Expo, a 3,500-participant JUST RUN 3K kids fun run, and the iconic marathon along California's scenic Highway One. Nearly 9,000 runners and walkers are registered to participate in six different distance events - marathon, relay, 21, 10.6 and 9 miles and a 5K - on Sunday morning, April 28.

Since 2010, the Big Sur Marathon has welcomed a special category of runners within its marathon - those who take the challenge of competing in the historic Boston Marathon followed directly by the scenic Big Sur Marathon, either six or 13 days later. This year's Boston 2 Big Sur (or B2B) Challenge has taken on even greater significance, as the race truly unites runners between the two coasts.

Four hundred runners signed up for the challenge that sold out several months ago. Even though many weren't able to finish last Monday's Boston Marathon, they will still receive a B2B finisher's medallion, finisher's jacket and will gain admittance into the B2B tent following this week's race, Sunday, April 28. This decision was welcomed by dozens of runners.

2013 State of the Sport - Part I: "Core Runner" Profiles
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - (April 21, 2013) - The 2013 National Runner Survey is a comprehensive study conducted every two years by Running USA. This survey is the fourth one conducted by Running USA. The National Runner Survey assesses the demographics, lifestyle, attitudes, habits and product preferences of the running population nationwide. Results from the National Runner Survey reflect "core runners", that is, active adult participants who tend to enter running events and train year-round.

Today's core runners are highly educated with 84.4% having earned a college diploma (overall U.S. adults = 30.4%) and affluent with 73.3% reporting a household income of more than $75,000 (U.S. median household income = $52,700). Core runners are active participants who train year-round and report running / jogging an average of 208 days and logging nearly 1,165 miles per year. These runners are motivated to run in order to stay in shape (77.3%), stay healthy (76.1%), relieve stress (61.9%) and have fun (61.7%).

The National Runner Survey is distributed electronically to running event participants, running club members, specialty running shoe store visitors, subscribers to running publications and those who frequent the online running community. Running USA worked closely with more than 60 organizations to help distribute the online survey to various constituency groups between the months of August through December of 2012. A total of 30,425 runners nationwide (56.4% female, 43.6% male) responded to the survey with an 81% rate of completion. Select results from the 2013 study are presented below.
