Indoor Champ UW-La Crosse Men on Top of DIII Outdoor Rankings

NEW ORLEANS – The indoor champion UW-La Crosse men have taken control of the race for the top spot in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III National Team Computer Rankings — released Wednesday — following the removal of 2012 data from the rankings formula, while the defending outdoor champion Wartburg women reside atop a large pack of teams in contention for the top spots.

UW-La Crosse is now in the driver’s seat to sweep the DIII track & field season after jumping to No. 1, while Wartburg is at the head of a pack of 10 team that are all bunched together near the top.

The National Team Computer Rankings are a projection of how teams could fare at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. This is the first week that does not feature marks from 2012, except for combined events. An explanation of the rankings system can be found here.

UW-La Crosse On Top for the First Time in 2013 Outdoor Season

UW-La Crosse, which has finished runner-up at the past two outdoor championships, is the top-ranked outdoor team for the first time since the 2012 preseason. Trailing then-No. 1 UW-Oshkosh by just two points in last week’s poll, the two teams went in opposite directions this week, with La Crosse jumping up 16.49 net points to a 189.82 team score and Oshkosh fell 29.81 net points to 145.37.

Whitworth leapt three spots to No. 3, increasing its team score by 13.33 net points to 121.65. UW-Whitewater remained stationary at No. 4, though it dropped 50.44 net points to 102.24, while UW-Eau Claire stayed put at No. 5 after a modest 9.43 net drop to 100.35 — just ahead of No. 6 Augustana (Ill.) at 100.27.

A pair of teams made double-digit jumps in position from the removal of preseason data, including No. 17 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (+11 spots) and No. 19 Salisbury (+19).

Wartburg Women Lead a Big Pack of Contenders

Just one week ago an enormous favorite with 2012 marks included in the rankings, the Wartburg women enter this week as a less prohibitive favorite in the computers after dropping 88.16 net points to 133.55.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was the biggest gainer in the top five, jumping six spots to No. 2 with a 30.68 net gain to 108.37. This is the highest CMS has been in the rankings since opening the 2011 season at No. 2.

Illinois College was the most stationary of all the teams in the rankings, remaining at No. 3 with a score of 99.92 after just a 0.94 net point gain. The Lady Blues are at the forefront of a group of seven teams all within 20 points of the No. 3 spot, just less than three points ahead of No. 4 Ramapo at 97.11 and about five ahead of No. 5 George Fox at 94.95.

No. 6 Emory (90.79), No. 7 Wheaton (Mass.) (90.40), No. 8 Rowan (87.25), No. 9 UW-Oshkosh (86.07) and No. 10 Mount Union (80.94) are all very much in the hunt moving forward, setting the stage for a very competitive NCAA Championships in a couple months’ time.

A significant number of women’s teams jumped up double-digit spots after 2012 marks were removed, including No. 7 Wheaton (+12), No. 8 Rowan (+24), No. 12 Nebraska Wesleyan (+11), No. 16 Buffalo State (+12) No. 20 Roanoke (+20) and No. 23 Washington and Jefferson (+26).
