TEMPE, Calif. – The annual in-state dual meet between the Arizona State, Arizona and Northern Arizona track and field teams has habitually produced some of the top marks in the country over the years as the teams begin to start peaking for the championships season in addition to the rivalry and in-state bragging right that are on the line.

Saturday’s Dual in The Desert was no different, with numerous prominent national marks set by all teams as the Sun Devil men rolled over the Wildcats, 118-79 while the No. 8 ASU women came just shy in a 102-87 decision to the No. 3 UA squad. Both the ASU men and women soundly defeated Northern Arizona by scores of 126-56 and 110-67, respectively.

Senior Chelsea Cassulo got the day going for the Sun Devils as she set the all-time NCAA dual meet record (according to the research of Jesse Squire at www.tracksuperfan.com) with her winning throw of 69.52m (228-01). The throw was just shy of her career best but took over the top throw in a dual or triangular meet from USC’s Eva Orban, who did so in the USC-UCLA Dual Meet in 2009.

Ryan Milus brought is running shoes for the Arizona State men as he swept the 100 and 200-meter dashes in dominating style.

The junior opened the day with a blistering 10.19 for a time that currently ranks 10th in the nation and was the second-fastest time in the in-state double dual history.

Milus bounced right back just over an hour later with the second-fastest 200-meter dash of his life in a time of 20.77, which currently ranks 20th in the nation.

As if that weren’t all enough, Milus teamed up with Devan Spann, Chris Burrows and Will Henry for a winning time of 39.40 that currently ranks seventh in the nation and was the third-fastest in this dual’s history.

Spann had a productive day for himself as well for the men’s spring, finishing as the runner up to Milus in both the 100 and 200 with a time of 10.50 in 100 before setting a new career best in 20.81 in the 200.

In the women’s 400-meter dash, sophomore Brianna Tate clocked the 10th-fastest time in ASU history with her mark of 52.65, which was the fifth-fastest in the dual meet history.

The men’s 1,500-meter run featured a blistering race that saw the top three times in the dual meet’s history set as the UA’s Lawi Lalang just edged ASU’s Darius Terry, who clocked a career best of 3:42.34 that now sits 15th in the country and fourth in ASU history.

The ASU men got the rout on early, as Garrett Baker-Slama laid down the hammer in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to win in a time of 9:09.31 with teammate Steven Schnieders helping with the sweep as he closed hard over the last 100 meters to take second in 9:14.29.

Back in the field events, Heather Arseneau continued her impressive first season with the Sun Devils as she scored a new career-best clearance of 4.09m (13-05.00) to win the pole vault competition ahead of teammate Shaylah Simpson, who was second at 4.00m (13-01.50). Arseneau’s mark improved upon her fourth-place hold in ASU history.

Derick Hinch did his part in the men’s pole vault, winning with a season’s best clearance of 5.35m (17-06.50), which ranks in the top-25 nationally this year.

Christabel Nettey swept the long and triple jump events with marks of 6.47m (21-02.75) and 12.42m (40-09.00), respectively while Anna Jelmini won the discus competition with a modest mark of 57.38m (188-03) after throwing 60.11m (197-02) at the Triton Invitational yesterday.

Jordan Clarke won the men’s hammer to start the day with a throw of 63.96m (209-10) before taking just a few throws in the shot put to cap the evening and win that event with a best mark of 18.91m (62-00.50).

With the victory, the Sun Devil men improved to 22-20-0 over the Wildcats and won their seventh straight in a series that had a first recorded score in 1969. The women are now 15-13-0 against their in-state foes since 1985, but have still won 11 of the last 13 in the series. The men are now 28-5-1 against NAU and the women are 22-2-0 against the Lumberjacks.

ASU returns to action next week in the opening weekend of the Pac-12 Championships as the men’s and women’s multi events will be contested in Los Angeles on Saturday and Sunday. Keia Pinnick is the only Sun Devils slated to compete and will enter as the favorite in the women’s heptathlon.
