2013 State of the Sport - Part I: "Core Runner" Profiles
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - (April 21, 2013) - The 2013 National Runner Survey is a comprehensive study conducted every two years by Running USA. This survey is the fourth one conducted by Running USA. The National Runner Survey assesses the demographics, lifestyle, attitudes, habits and product preferences of the running population nationwide. Results from the National Runner Survey reflect "core runners", that is, active adult participants who tend to enter running events and train year-round.
Today's core runners are highly educated with 75.8% having earned a college diploma (overall U.S. adults = 30.4%) and affluent with 73.3% reporting a household income of more than $75,000 (U.S. median household income = $52,700). Core runners are active participants who train year-round and report running / jogging an average of 208 days and logging nearly 1,165 miles per year. These runners are motivated to run in order to stay in shape (77.3%), stay healthy (76.1%), relieve stress (61.9%) and have fun (61.7%).
The National Runner Survey is distributed electronically to running event participants, running club members, specialty running shoe store visitors, subscribers to running publications and those who frequent the online running community. Running USA worked closely with more than 60 organizations to help distribute the online survey to various constituency groups between the months of August through December of 2012. A total of 30,425 runners nationwide (56.4% female, 43.6% male) responded to the survey with an 81% rate of completion. Select results from the 2013 study are presented below.

World Marathon Majors Introduces Tougher Anti-Doping Penalties
TOKYO -
World Marathon Majors (WMM) members Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York have collectively revised their elite athlete contracts to include stricter anti-doping penalties. New provisions will include the right for the events to suspend payment and to demand repayment of prize money, appearances fees, and performance bonuses for any athlete found in violation of a criminal offense involving drugs, anti-doping rules, or if for any other reason the athlete's result has been nullified by a relevant governing body.
These new penalties are part of WMM's continuing effort to be a leader in the anti-doping movement, having gone above and beyond standard drug testing at its events. WMM has supported increasing the number and frequency of out-of-competition drug tests in Ethiopia and Kenya. The events aim to ensure the integrity of the athletes competing in their races, with the majority of top male and female competitors hailing from these two countries. Additionally, WWM has previously agreed that any athlete found guilty of a doping offense will not be invited back to its races.
"This is a great initiative and a very positive and strong move by the World Marathon Majors, which is once again leading the field by example," said Paula Radcliffe, the current women's world record-holder in the marathon
and past winner of the London, Chicago and New York City Marathons. "I would love to see all major events follow its lead."

Inaugural Marin 415 Mile & Miracle Mile Set for Sunday, July 21
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - A new running event is coming to Marin County and the entire 415 is invited. The Inaugural Marin 415 Mile and Miracle Mile Benefiting Girls on the Run Bay Area is set for Sunday, July 21st 2013 in San Rafael. Featuring a distance for the whole family, organizers have slated a 5-mile, one mile, and 415Kids Race all starting and finishing in the heart of San Rafael's popular 4th Street Business District.
The new event is an expansion of the popular San Rafael Mile that has brought some of the top Bay Area athletes to compete in Marin. In 2013, Represent Running, the producer behind the successful San Jose 408K Race to The Row, has partnered with local race production company Marin Runs to include the Marin 415 Mile as part of Represent Running's "area code" run series.
Race Director and Founder of Marin Runs, Jason Jacobson, enthused: "We're very excited to bring the 415Mile to Marin County. We believe this new look event will maintain all the family aspects of our past runs, but also bring a truly fun run element to downtown San Rafael that even more runners can enjoy."
Represent Running serves as the other half of the new partnership and is owned by San Francisco's Soul Focus Sports.

The One Fund Boston Announced
BOSTON - April 17, 2013 - Massachusetts
Governor Deval Patrick and Boston
Mayor Menino announced the formation of The One Fund Boston, the purpose of which is to raise money to help those families most affected by the tragic events that unfolded during Monday's Boston Marathon.
"I am humbled by the outpouring of support by the business community and individuals who are united in their desire to help; The One Fund Boston will act as a central fund to receive much needed financial support," Governor Patrick said. "At moments like this, we are one state, one city, and one people."
According to Mayor Menino, support from the business community was immediate. "Within an hour, I had calls from business leaders and local philanthropists who, like me, were heartbroken by the impact this hideous tragedy has had on individuals, their families, and friends. And they want to do everything they can to help these people physically and psychologically in the future."
The cornerstone donation to The One Fund Boston is a $1 million commitment from John Hancock.
