“Steeplechics” Calendar aids non-school entrants
Competition opportunities are many for USA athletes on school
teams – but less so for club, military, and unattached athletes. A
calendar for all is at http://www.steeplechics.com/calendar.php
The “Steeplechics” website, created and administered by Ann
Gaffigan, former USA steeple record-holder, is in its sixth year.
http://www.steeplechics.com/LeeValleyOpen.pdf shows information
about an April 10 GBR meet that has three steeple events
(1500m, 2000m, 3000m) at a venue on the north side of London.

More about Youth Olympic Games qualifying schedule
For YOG next August in Singapore, African athletes have four regional
qualifiying meets: May 7-9 at Libreville, May 14-16 at Dakar
and Pretoria, May 19-22 at Algiers. Europeans qualify May 22-23
at Moscow. USA has one early day – April 3 at Arlington, Texas.

Steeple Safety and track orientation
In Part Two of our “steeplers safety series” we mentioned that
A track’s straightaway orientation can be a critical variable to avoid
sun or bright lights in the eyes of a steepler going over a barrier.
Example: if a track’s straightaways are east-west AND the finish
line is in such track’s northwest quadrant, then water jump should
be just north of the east curve’s center point. So athletes would
look north, not facing sun, as they go over the barrier and water.
We have seen that orientation at venues such as the University
of Tennessee and the West Seattle Stadium.
