Sun Devils Set to Send 11 Athletes to NCAA Indoor Championships
NCAA announced accepted entries for national meet that will be held in Arkansas March 12-13

TEMPE – The NCAA released its list of accepted entries into the 2010 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships that will be held Friday and Saturday at the Randal Tyson Center in Fayetteville, Ark., with 11 members of the Arizona State University track and field program earning places in the meet. Overall, two women and nine different men were selected for the championships with both women three men earning automatic berths into the event earlier this year.

For the women, a pair of true freshmen will represent the Sun Devils as Constance Ezugha (Edmond, Okla.) and Christabel Nettey (Surrey, B.C., Canada) both automatically qualified for the long jump event two weeks ago at the MPSF Indoor Championships. The only rookies in the event this season, Ezugha enters the meet with a leap of 6.45m, which is tied for eighth-best in the field, while Nettey’s mark of 6.42m ranks 11th.

On the men’s side, three automatic berths were attained by Brandon Bethke (Lake Forest, CA; Wisconsin) in the 5,000m run, who ranks fifth heading into the meet with a time of 7:54.27; national leader Ryan Whiting (Harrisburg, PA) in the shot put (21.52m) and fourth-ranked Jason Lewis (Phoenix, AZ) in the weight throw (21.92m). Lewis, for the second year in a row, will compete in the shot put, where he is ranked 10th overall (18.87m).

Back on the track, Donald Sanford (Inglewood, Calif.; City Honors High School; Morgan State U., Baltimore, MD) made the field in the 400m dash with the eighth-best time of 46.19 while Mason McHenry (Bellingham, WA) will run in the 800m run with the 11th-best time in the nation at 1:48.04. Both of those men are part of the relays that also qualified for the meet, including the sixth-ranked 4x400m relay (3:06.70) and the fourth-ranked distance medley relay (9:31.34). Sanford will be joined in the 4x400m relay by Justin Kremer (Grand Canyon, AZ), Ray Miller (Monrovia, Calif. Glendale CC) and Joel Phillip (St. Paul's, Grenada) while McHenry will join Bethke, Nectaly Barbosa (Prosser, WA) and one of the sprinters for the DMR.

The championships begin on Friday at the University of Arkansas with the following Sun Devils competing: Whiting and Lewis in the shot put (finals) at 2:45 p.m.; Sanford in the 400m dash (preliminary round) at 5:55 p.m.; McHenry in the 800m run (preliminary) at 6:55 p.m.; Ezugha and Nettey in the long jump (finals) at 7:25 p.m.; Bethke in the 5,000m run (final) at 8 p.m.; and the distance medley relay (final) at 9:05 p.m. On Saturday, Lewis will compete in the weight throw (final) at 2 p.m.; Sanford (6:55 p.m.) and McHenry (7:35 p.m.) should they advance to the finals in their respective events; and the final of the 4x400m relay (8:25 p.m.).
