Clay, Trey & Hyleas chase combined events gold in Doha

DOHA, Qatar - Bryan Clay (Azusa Pacific), Trey Hardee and Hyleas Fountain will be competing in the combined events competition at the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships, March 12-14, in the Aspire Dome in Doha, Qatar.

Men's heptathlon

Who really is the World's Greatest Athlete? Is it 2008 Olympic decathlon champion Bryan Clay? Or is it 2009 World Outdoor champion Trey Hardee? Hardee and Clay will go head-to-head this weekend in the heptathlon. May the best man win.

The first U.S. Olympic decathlon champion since Dan O'Brien in 1996, reigning World Indoor champion Bryan Clay amassed 8,791 points in capturing the Olympic gold medal in Beijing. His winning margin was a whopping 240 points over silver medalist Andrei Krauchanka of Belarus, which is the largest winning margin at an Olympic Games since 1972.

Trey Hardee won the decathlon at the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin with a personal best and world leading score of 8,790 points, which bettered his previous personal best by a whopping 256 points. Hardee posted a winning margin of 150 points over silver medalist Leonel Suarez of Cuba. With his performance in Berlin, Hardee is now the #3 all-time American in the decathlon behind only Dan O'Brien and Bryan Clay, and his performance is ranked #9 on the all time list and was the highest score at a World Outdoor Championships since 2001.

Women's pentathlon

2008 Olympic heptathlon silver medalist Hyleas Fountain is seeking redemption after an eighth place finish at the 2006 World Indoor Championships. And is she ever ready. At a meet in January, Fountain set a new personal best when she recorded the second-best score ever by an American, amassing 4,731 points. The mark is just 22 points shy of DeeDee Nathan's 11-year old American record. Also this season, Fountain has set personal bests in the long jump (6.70m/21-11.75), when she placed third at the USA Indoor Championships, and in the shot put (14.26m/46-9.5).

Fountain became the only American woman other than Jackie Joyner-Kersee ever to win an Olympic medal in the heptathlon, coming away with a silver-medal performance in Beijing with her total of 6,619 points.
