WALLACE, ROBINSON AND BROOKINS EACH QUALIFY FOR NCAA INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
3/8/2010
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Three members of the Sacramento State track and field team are headed to Fayetteville, Ark., at the end of the week for the 2010 NCAA Div. I Indoor Championships, it was announced today. Just like the outdoor season, the three will be comprised of Lea Wallace, Renisha Robinson and Ronald Brookins.
Wallace and Robinson cemented their entry into the championships with spectacular showings at last weekend's UW Last Chance Meet in Seattle. Wallace met the NCAA automatic standard, and set the Sacramento State record in the process, with a time of 2:04.73. That mark places her seventh in the nation heading into the championships.
Robinson also set a career best at the meet and came in under the provisional standard with a time of 2:05.38. The junior is seeded 13th overall in the 800.
The only other schools to have two student-athletes entered into the women's 800 are BYU (three) and Tennessee (two).
Unlike his female teammates, Brookins had to wait until the final moment to find out if he had qualified for the 60-meter hurdles. The junior had been ranked 13th nationally until last weekend. After two athletes jumped ahead of his time of 7.83 seconds, Brookins — who did not compete at the last chance meets — dropped to 15th. Each event is guaranteed to have 14 competitors in the field with the remaining spots coming from at-large entries.
It turns out that all five student-athletes than ran 7.83 during the year earned invites moving the field to 19 competitors.
The 2010 championships begin on Friday, March 12, with the qualifying rounds. The finals will take place on Saturday, March 13.
