March 6, 2010

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford track and field got its outdoor season underway on a sunny afternoon at Cobb Track and Angell Field with the Stanford Opener. The Cardinal had several athletes compete in this early season meet.

The men were led by the throwers with Geoffrey Tabor SO Ardmore, OK (Ardmore) winning both the shot put and the discus. Tabor tossed 57-3 in the shot put and 184-10 in the discus. Adding to the meet titles for the throwers was freshman Robert Hintz [Bellevue, WA (Bellevue)] who won the javelin with a toss of 193-2.

The other meet title for the Stanford men was Mark Mueller [Class:
Junior; Hometown:Aurora, CO; High School:Overland HS]
who won the 200 meters. Mueller ran a time of 21.80.

The women were led by Elaine Patten in the high jump. Patten took the meet title with a jump of 5-7. Other standouts in the field events included Natasha Barthel in the pole vault. Barthel finished second in the event with a mark of 12-5.

Justine Fedronic and Madeline Duhon

On the track, Justine Fedronic and Madeline Duhon finished first and second in the 800 meters. Fedronic took the title with a time of 2:12.35, while Duhon finished with a time of 2:12.79.

In addition to the meet at Stanford, a handful of athletes traveled to last chance meets to try to improve their indoor mark in an effort to secure a spot in next week's NCAA Indoor Championships. Griffin Matthew led the Cardinal, upping her season best in the long jump with a mark of 20-5 ¾. The mark was a provisional standard for Mathew. Mathew also competed in the 200 meters, finishing with a time of 23.83, which was just off her season best.

Also faring well in Arkansas was Whitney Liehr in the triple jump. Liehr improved her provisional standard with a mark of 42-3 ½. The other Stanford athletes at the meet were Arantxa King in the long jump and Jules Sharpe in the high jump. King leaped 20-2 ½, while Sharpe jumped 6-10 ¾, both off their season bests.

Stanford will be back in action at the NCAA Indoor Championships next weekend in Fayetteville, Ark. Stay tuned to gostanford.com for the announcement of all of the Stanford qualifiers.
