NEW ORLEANS – Virginia Tech senior Tasmin Fanning has been named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Women’s NCAA Division I Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year, the Association announced on Monday.

The Charlottesville, Virginia native finished third overall at 2008 NCAA Division I Cross Country National Championships. Earlier in the season, she finished as runner-up at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships and then won the Southeast Regional title. Fanning is the first Hokie to ever win an NCAA Cross Country Regional title, male or female.

Fanning maintains a 3.40 cumulative grade point average and is majoring in human nutrition, foods and exercise at Virginia Tech.

The senior was named the 2008 USTFCCCA Southeast Region Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year.

A total of 77 Division I female student-athletes received 2008 USTFCCCA Cross Country All-Academic honors, representing 52 Division I institutions. University of Minnesota placed the most student-athletes on the list with five, followed closely by West Virginia University with four student-athletes receiving All-Academic recognition.

The Big Ten Conference had the most conference student-athletes on the 2008 USTFCCCA Cross Country All-Academic list with 13, followed by the Big East Conference and Southeastern Conference with eight student-athletes each, and the Atlantic Coast Conference and Big 12 Conference, each with six conference student-athletes on the list.

The award honors those student-athletes who have succeeded both academically and athletically. To be eligible for the award a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade point average and must finish in the top 15 finishers (or top 10%) of the field at their respective NCAA regional meet or attain All-American status at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships.

Galen Rupp of the University of Oregon is the 2008 NCAA Division I USTFCCCA Men’s Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year.
