SEATTLE - California set eight NCAA provisional qualifying times or marks as well as four indoor school records on Saturday at the MPSF Indoor Championships at Washington's Dempsey Indoor Facility, where the Golden Bears men finished tied for second and the Cal women placed sixth in the overall team standings. A pair of provisional qualifying times highlighted Cal's day, as senior Mark Matusak became the fourth-fastest runner in the men's 3000-meter run in Cal history with a fifth-place and lifetime-best time of 8:01.77, while sophomore Michael Coe became the fifth-fastest Bear in the men's one-mile run with a winning 4:00.29.
The Cal men compiled 78.50 points to tie for second with Washington State. UCLA (83.50) won the men's team title. The Bears women collected 68.50 points, with Stanford (115) taking the women's crown. The Cal men's finish tied their second-place finish from 2008, while the women wound up two spots behind last year's fourth-place finish.
"Matusak did a great job coming back in that race," Cal head coach Tony Sandoval said. "With Coe, things are really coming together for him. He had a great fall. The maturity is starting to kick in, and right now he's one of the hottest runners in the country."
Coe's time in the mile, senior Sean Carey's third-place time of 1:49.65 in the men's 800-meter run, senior Kellan Patterson's winning time of 6.77 in the men's 60-meter dash and senior Brook Turner's second-place time of 54.31 in the women's 400-meter dash are new school indoor records. Turner also ran a provisional qualifying time in the 200. Patterson's time was three hundredths of a second from a provisional qualifier.
One of the Bears Matusak trails on Cal's all-time 3000 list is Coe, who set a school and all-time record of 7:48.05 in the Husky Classic on Feb. 14.
Four more Bears posted NCAA provisional qualifiers at MPSFs, including senior Ed Wright, who won the men's high jump with a mark of 2.21 meters (7-3.00), and senior Mackenzie Pierce, who won the women's 800-meter run with a time of 2:06.45. Cal sophomore Cherrelle Garrett clocked a provisional qualifying time of 7.38 to tie for second place in the women's 60-meter dash and freshman Sebastian Sam ran a provisionally qualifying 1:49.86 to take fourth in the men's 800.
Even with all the qualifiers and indoor records Cal set today, Sandoval lauded his athletes' team effort on Saturday.
"Certainly that was what we were looking for, more than anything else - a team effort to get points," he said. "We were tied for first going into the pole vault, and we got close together today. The provisional marks were just an added bonus for us.
"After the first day, I told them, `There's a lot of the track meet left to be completed. We had ebbs and flows but stay positive. You've got to keep working.'"
Cal is back in action when it hosts a quad meet with Stanford, Fresno State and UC Davis on Saturday, March 7, at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley.
