Oregon men, Tennessee women win National titles

The Oregon men won their first indoor team title with 54 points, while the Tennessee women won their second team title since 2005 with 42 points over the weekend at the 2009 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships, at Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium College Station, Texas. The Florida men were second to Oregon with 36 points, and Texas A&M's women were second to Tennessee with 37 points.

Oregon senior and 2008 Olympian Galen Rupp led his team to victory and became the first person in NCAA history to win the 5,000 meters, 3,000m and the distance medley relay in the same championship. Rupp started with a win in the 5,000m in 13 minutes 41..45 seconds. Less than 90 minutes later, he anchored the DMR to victory, splitting 3:57.07 over the final 1,600m to cross the line in 9:29.59. On Saturday Rupp cruised to a title in the 3,000m, winning in 7:48.94, more than 5 seconds ahead of the field.

Jenny Barringer became the fifth fastest American ever over 3,000m, winning the race in a collegiate record 8:42.03 to break the 8:48.77 collegiate standard set by Sally Kipyego at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games last month.

Texas Tech's Kipyego won a ninth individual national title. She won won the women's 5,000m, her record-tying ninth national title, in 15:51.14 to match three-time Olympian Suzy Favor Hamilton. She then finished as the runner-up in the women's mile, crossing the line in 4:29.75 just .03 behind Tennessee's Sarah Bowman who won in 4:29.72.

University of Texas junior Destinee Hooker won her first national indoor title in the women's high jump, clearing a collegiate record and personal best 1.98 meters/6 feet 6 inches. The previous record of 1.97m/6-5.5 was held by multiple NCAA jumpers, most recently accomplished in 2000.

St. Aug's, Lincoln win DII titles

Saint Augustine's College won their fourth consecutive men's national title on Saturday and the Lincoln University women dominated the women's competition in winning their third team title in six years at the 2009 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships, held at Yeoman Field House on the campus of the University of Houston..

On the women's side, Lincoln scored 100.5 team points for the win, while their closest competitor Grand Valley State took second with 48.

For St. Augustine's, the victory gave the Falcons their 31st national championship overall (men's and women's indoor and outdoor) under head coach George Williams.

Wisconsin-La Crosse and Wisconsin-Oshkosh tie for men's team title at DIII Champs

Wisconsin-La Crosse tied in-state conference foe Wisconsin-Oshkosh for the men's national title as each squad tallied 32 points, and Wartburg College won the women's team title at the 2009 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championships, held at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind.

Wisconsin-La Crosse placed second in the women's team standings, followed by Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Illinois Wesleyan and Tufts. On the men's side, Whitworth recorded a third-place finish with McMurry and Buena Vista rounding out the team top five..

A total of 446 student-athletes from 134 colleges in 27 states competed in the two days of action at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Records abound at high school meets

2008 World Junior hammer throw silver medalist Conor McCullough started his weekend on Friday at the 2009 Nike Indoor Nationals at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston with a U.S. high school record-throw 28.23m/92-7.5 in winning the boys weight throw. He then traveled down to New York to compete at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships on Sunday, where he won again in record fashion with his toss of 28.42m/93-3.25.

Robby Andrews of Manalapan, N.J., ran 1:49.21 to shatter the national high school indoor record in the 800-meter run with his win at the 26th National Scholastic Indoor Championships at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory in New York.

Also at Nike Indoor Nationals in Boston, Lukas Verzbicas of New Lenox, Ill., broke a 15-year-old record by more than 11 seconds, winning the boys 5,000 in 14:18.42. According to Dyestat.com, 2007 World Youth gold medalist Wayne Davis of Raleigh N.C. had been on crutches all weekend with a sprained ankle, before winning the boys 60m hurdles in a U.S. record 7.60.
