BOSTON, Mass. – MSU freshman sprinter D’Angelo Cherry ran an impressive time of 6.52 seconds in the 60-meter dash at the 2009 USATF Indoor Championships on Sunday. Cherry’s time broke a 10-year-old American Junior record of 6.56 seconds that was held by Leonard Scott.

Cherry, a Biloxi, Miss., native, finished second overall in a field of all professional Olympic caliber athletes.

“To run 6.52 seconds was exceptional,” associate head coach Steve Dudley said. “He did a wonderful job today.”

Mark Jelks (Nike) won the men’s 60-meter dash crown, edging Cherry by .01 of a second, running 6.51 seconds. Kendall Stevens (Unattached) rounded out the Top 3 with a time of 6.56 seconds.

Cherry ran 6.57 seconds to win his semi-final heat. He entered the finals with the second fastest time.

Cherry also shattered the MSU school record of 6.60 seconds set Pierre Browne, a mark that has stood since the men stopped competing collegiately in indoor track and field in 2003.

“To shatter a record that was held by one of the greatest sprinters in school history is a big thing,” Dudley said. “We are excited about seeing what he can do for us in the outdoor season.”

Cherry will open his outdoor season for the Bulldogs on March 7 in Jacksonville, Fla., where he will primarily run the 100-meter dash for the Maroon and White.
