BERKELEY - California posted seven NCAA regional qualifiers in the Cal Outdoor Opener on Saturday at Edwards Stadium and Goldman Field. The Golden Bears won six of those seven events, including senior Brook Turner's win in the women's 400-meter dash in a time 54.35 and senior Kellan Patterson's win in the men's 100-meter dash in 10.54.

Cal also won the following events with regional-qualifying marks or times: the men's 110-Meter Hurdles (senior Jordan Paul, 14.08), women's high jump (senior Inika McPherson 1.80 meters), women's triple jump (senior Artensia Young, 12.44 meters) and men's discus throw (senior Martin Maric, 56.71 meters).

Junior Kristen Meister took second behind her teammate, McPherson, in the women's high jump with a regional-qualifying 1.75 meters.

Cal capped its Cal Outdoor Opener by taking second in the women's 4x400-meter relay, the meet's penultimate event on Saturday The Bears' quartet ran a time of 3:49.49. The winning Fresno State A relay posted a time of 3:48.69.

The host did not enter a foursome in the men's 4x400-meter relay, the last event of the meet that featured three Fresno State relays. Fresno State A won the race in a time of 3:23.69.

Also on Saturday, Washington's Dempsey Indoor Facility in Seattle hosted a meet that was the last chance for many athletes to either post qualifying marks or times or to improve upon qualifiers ahead of the NCAA Indoor Championships slated for March 13-14 in College Station, Texas. Two Bears competed in the pole vault at Dempsey Indoor. Junior Ryan Shuler tied for second in the men's event with a mark of 5.18 meters (17-0.00), just shy of the NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 5.20 meters. Sophomore Allison Stokke tied for second in the women's event with a provisional-qualifying mark of 4.02 meters (13-2.25), though she posted a better provisional-qualifying mark (4.07/13-4.25) earlier this season.





Cal is back in action at the NCAA Indoor Championships next Friday and Saturday on the campus of Texas A&M.
