John McDonnell Program of the Year

March 3, 2009

NEW ORLEANS – With the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field National Championships only 11 days away, it is time to update the John McDonnell Program of the Year standings following the completion of the 2008 cross country season and prior to the 2009 indoor national championships.

The University of Oregon currently leads the men’s team standings with one point which the team earned for winning the NCAA Cross Country National Championship. Oregon is currently the top-ranked men’s program in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Indoor Track & Field National Rankings.

Iona College is second in the Program of the Year Standings with two team points, followed by No. 25 Stanford with three team points. Wisconsin sits in fourth place overall, with Auburn in fifth.

The John McDonnell Program of the Year Award will be awarded annually to the most outstanding NCAA Division I men’s cross country/track & field program. The award will honor the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field seasons) based on the institution’s finish at the NCAA Division I Championships.

In order to be eligible for the award teams must qualify for the NCAA Championships. Scoring will be based on the team’s finish at each NCAA Division I Championship in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field (i.e. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points, 31st = 31 points) with the lowest total score for all three championships combined determining the award recipient.

The John McDonnell Program of the Year Award is named after USTFCCCA Hall of Famer and former Arkansas long-time head coach John McDonnell. John McDonnell’s Arkansas teams won a combined 40 National Championships.
