J.J. Hunter Named Assistant Coach for Men's and Women's Track & Field

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Steve Dolan, the James P. Tuppeny and Betty J. Costanza Director of Track and Field/Cross Country, has announced that J.J. Hunter will join the Quakers staff as an assistant sprints and horizontal jumps coach beginning with the 2016-17 season.
Hunter comes to Penn following successful collegiate coaching stints at the University of Miami, Florida International and The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). During a span of seven seasons, Hunter has guided five student-athletes to NCAA national qualifying marks, 24 All-America honors, 11 school records holders and over 100 all-conference accolades have been honored under his tutelage.
Hunter served as the recruiting coordinator and assistant coach for men’s sprints, hurdles, jumps, and multi-events at the University of Miami. Under his coaching, Lance Leggett became the 2007 ACC runner-up in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 7.79 seconds and was an ACC champion in the 400 meter hurdles. Additionally, Roland DaSliva (heptathlon) and Elan Daviglus (high jump) gained NCAA qualifying marks alongside Leggett and more than 10 student-athletes earned All-ACC laurels. Additionally, one ACC champion and three ACC runner-up performances were earned during Hunter’s time with the Hurricanes.
Prior to Miami, Hunter spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Florida International University where he served as the sprint and hurdle coach for both men and women. Hunter led three student-athletes, including the 2004 Sun Belt 200 meter indoor champion, to NCAA qualifying marks during his two years with the Panthers. Additionally, four school records were broken and 15 student-athletes garnered All-Sun Belt accolades during Hunter’s time at FIU.
Hunter began his collegiate coaching career at TCNJ where he was an assistant coach for sprints, hurdles and jumps. In three seasons at the Division III level, Hunter coached 24 NCAA All-American’s, 79 NJAC All-Conference honorees, 23 NJAC champions and seven conference and school record holders. He also led two student-athletes to USATF Junior Nationals and helped guide the 2002 and 2003 teams to top-10 NCAA finishes. One of his protégés also earned 2002 Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors and was selected as a 2003 USATFCCCA Academic All-American. 

Hunter earned his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from La Salle University and furthered his education at UC Berkeley where he received a Master’s in Business Administration. As an athlete, Hunter owns personal bests in the 100 meters of 10.10 seconds and in the 200 of 20.83. In 1998, he ranked 25th in the nation in the 100 meters and was a three-time qualifier for the USATF National Outdoor Championships.
Hunter holds several USATF coaching certifications, including level 2 accreditations in both the combined events and jumps.
