Dons Take 28th at NCAA Championships
Louisville, Kent. –– At the NCAA Cross Country Championships held at Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kent. on Saturday morning, USF ran alongside the top teams in the country, finishing 28th overall to wrap up its 2015 season.
The Dons ran a very competetive race, with Elena Burkard leading the charge - the redshirt junior placed 85th with a time of 20:45.4 in the 6K race. Following Burkard came Charlotte Taylor (20:58.9) in 118th and Weronika Pyzik (132), who completed the course in 21:03.1. The Dons youth showed in the Championships as the Green and Gold were unable to place any more runners in the top 200. Tatjana Schulte took 233rd with a time of 22:12.8. Following her came Daryl Phill (22:18.5) in 239th, Emma Stähr (23:21.7) in 251st and Kelsey Nielsen (23:45.5) in 254th.
"Our top three women ran their hearts out and battled hard," said head cross country coach Helen Lehman-Winters. "We are happy to have gained some experience with this young squad and look forward to returning next year with a deeper squad."
In the individual standings, Molly Seidel of Notre Dame dominated the field, taking home the title with a time of 19:28.6, over four seconds faster than Boise State's Allie Ostrander, the second place finisher. Dominique Scott of Arkansas rounded out the top three with a time of 19:40.9.
New Mexico earned the team title after totalling 49 points, with five runners finishing in the top 20. Following the Lobos in the team standings were Colorado (129) in second place and Oregon (214) in third place.
This was the third time in the last five years the Dons have competed in the NCAA Championships, taking 25th in 2011 and 18th in 2013. The young Dons will return their entire roster in 2016 as Pyzik, Burkard and Taylor will all look to lead the Dons again next fall.
