Cal Men Qualify For NCAA Championships

Golden Bear Men Earn At-Large Status After Finishing Sixth At NCAA West Regional
By Cal Athletics on Fri, November 13, 2015
SEATTLE, Wash. – The California men’s cross country team earned an at-large bid for the upcoming NCAA Cross Country Championships after a stellar showing this season that culminated in a sixth-place finish at the NCAA West Regional Championships that were held Friday at Jefferson Golf Course in Seattle.
The Cal men were sixth with 146 points after being led by a 19th-place individual finish from senior Chris Walden.
"Both men and women ran their best team effort for the year," California Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Tony Sandoval said. "We're thrilled that the men qualified as an at - large team.  We know anything can happen at NCAA's and we believe we can run better in Louisville. We ran there in October and it helps that were familiar with the course."
The Cal women placed seventh overall with 234 points behind a 28th-place individual finish from Mariel Mendoza.
"The women ran tough today but not having Bethan Knight hurt our chances to qualify the women to NCAA's as well," Sandoval said. "They have really pulled together in her absence."
California's NCAA Championships bid is the first for the men since the team claimed 31st in 2010.
Walden and John Lawson both earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors for their performances Friday. Walden was 19th at 31:33.2, and Lawson was 25th at 31:44.7.
Oregon won the women's team title, and Washington won the men's team title.
