State Cross Country Championships to Remain in Fresno Through 2021
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Fresno will remain the home for the CIF State Cross Country Championships through 2021, the CIF State Executive Committee has announced. The new six-year agreement will run from 2016-2021 at Woodward Park, the only home the event has ever known since its inception in 1987.
“Woodward Park has been the home for the CIF State Cross Country Championships since the event began 29 years ago,” said CIF State Executive Director Roger Blake. “We are pleased that it will remain the site for the next six years as the Fresno and Clovis communities continue to be gracious hosts to all involved.”
Annually, nearly 2,000 student-athletes from across the state compete in the CIF State Cross Country Championships, bringing $1 million annually to the local economy – according to the Fresno Bee. The Championships feature a total of 10 races, five divisions of competition for both male and female athletes. All races are contested on a 5,000-meter course that features hard packed dirt trails with some grass and asphalt. It has mild ups and downs over rolling hills with one steep short hill.
“It has been an honor and privilege to have hosted the CIF Cross Country event in past years and we look forward to hosting these incredible athletes, their families and the CIF Staff for many more years to come,” said Fresno/Clovis Convention & Visitors Bureau President/CEO, Layla Forstedt. “Over 1,200 hotel rooms will be occupied, restaurants will be filled with athletes and coaches, team vans will be filling up their gas tanks, and Fresno’s amazing Woodward Park will be enjoyed by many.”
