Tapia Finishes 27th In Moscow's World Championships Marathon

(Colorado Springs, CO) - Despite a late selection to Team USA leaving him only 25-days to prepare, Daniel Tapia (Mizuno) took on the challenge and finished 27th in the marathon at the IAAF World Championships of Athletics on Saturday in Moscow, Russia.

Under a bright mid-afternoon sun on a criterion course with no shade, Tapia, along with USA teammates Jeff Eggelston and Carlos Trujillo, started conservatively with an opening 5k of 16:00 in 52nd-place in the 70-man field. Tapia and Eggleston, who would impressively finish 13th, slowly moved through the field over the course of the race, neither losing position throughout the competition. Tapia finished with a time of 2:18:32, well off his best mark of 2:14.30. The warm afternoon conditions contributed to 25% of the field to dropping out and prevented any of the finishers from posting personal best marks.

Tapia, who had planned to begin marathon training in preparation for the Amsterdam Marathon to be held on October 20, accepted the spot on Team USA less than four weeks prior to the competition when Mo Trafeh withdrew with an injury. He will evaluate his fitness and his recovery coming out of the World Championships and make a decision within two weeks as to wether to continue training for Amsterdam.

Thomas Destroys Field At America's Finest Half Marathon

(Colorado Springs, CO) - Wendy Thomas (adidas/BRC) matched stride for stride with 2:26:31 Grandma's Marathon champion Sarah Kiptoo in the early stages of the America's Finest City Half Marathon Sunday morning in San Diego, CA, before opening up a lead with a 4:49 mile surge on the downhill 4th-mile. Thomas, who blew through the 10k mark in 33:19, never looked back winning her first major road race by nearly two-minutes in 1:13:15. Thomas' nearest challenger was runner-up Natasha Lebeud who crossed the line in 1:14:54. Thomas used the morning race as a segment of a two-block training day in preparation for the US Marathon Championships to be hosted by the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon in Minneapolis, MN, on October 06.

On the men's side, Colorado Springs based Ernest Kebenei, marathon training partner for Augustus Maiyo (US Army/WCAP), finished runner-up in the men's race in 1:02:04.
