Oliver, Merritt lead Americans in Stockholm

Reigning world champions David Oliver (men’s 110m hurdles) and LaShawn Merritt (men’s 400m) each continued their hot streaks as they won their respective events Thursday as the Diamond League season continued in Stockholm. Francena McCorory also won the women’s 400m for Americans competing in Stockholm.

Stockholm is the 12th of 14 stops on the Diamond League season. Complete results from Thursday’s competition can be found here.

Oliver, who claimed World Outdoor gold in the men’s 110m hurdles, faced a deep field in the event Thursday. Oliver won the event in a time of 13.21, which was ahead of Russia's Sergey Shubenkov, who was second in 13.35. 2011 world champion Jason Richardson placed fourth (13.37) and 2013 World Outdoor silver medalist Ryan Wilson was sixth (13.60).

Merritt, who is fresh off winning a pair of gold medals in the 400m and 4x400m in Moscow, won the men’s 400m in a time of 44.69. Josh Mance placed fourth in the event in a time of 46.08.

Will Leer claimed top honors in the men’s 1500m “B” race in a time of 3:36.97. Americans also picked up second place finishes from Alexandria Anderson in the women’s 100m (11.25), Andrew Bayer in the men’s 1500m “B” race (3:37.58) and Alysia Montano in the women’s 800m (1:58.96).

Americans competed in Stockholm on the heels of winning a total of 25 medals at the recent World Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Moscow, Russia, where it also won the overall point standings by 100 points.
