Preseason Rankings for NCAA Division II Cross Country Revealed

August 27, 2013

NEW ORLEANS - Preseason regional rankings for the Division II cross country season were announced Tuesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) in advance of the official beginning of the season on September 5.

Many of the regional champions from the 2012 season have been selected as the preseason favorites to reclaim their regional titles from a year ago. Six of the eight men’s regional champion teams and all eight of the women’s champions start out the 2013 campaign on top of their region rankings.

The preseason National Coaches Polls will be announced Wednesday, with the official opening date of the Division II cross country season little more than a week later on Thursday, September 5.

Headlining the men’s preseason region favorites is defending NCAA DII and South Central Region champion Adams State, which gets the nod in the region over 2011 NCAA champ Western State and 2012 national runner-up Colorado Mines, in that order.

Chico State is on top of the West Region to start the season after claiming the regional crown and finishing fifth at NCAAs. The West is another region that will be hotly contested in 2013, as Alaska Anchorage was third at NCAAs a year ago.

The other regional champions that return as preseason favorites are Edinboro (Atlantic Region), Augustana (S.D.) (Central); American International (East); and Grand Valley State (Midwest).

Two teams who recorded runners-up finishes in their respective regions a year ago replaced the defending champions atop the preseason rankings: Alabama-Huntsville (South Region) and Mount Olive (Southeast).

The women’s rankings even more closely reflect the 2012 regional results with the champions from all eight regions beginning 2013 as preseason favorites.

Defending NCAA DII Champion Grand Valley State is on top of the Great Lakes Region, while 2012 national runner-up and 2011 national champ Augustana (S.D.) starts atop the Central Region.

Adams State beat out Western State at both the South Central and NCAA Championships (ASU’s third to WSC’s fourth), and again finds itself ahead of its RMAC rivals in the preseason South Central rankings to start 2013.

Fifth-place national finisher Chico State will kick off 2013 atop the West Region.

Shippensburg (Atlantic Region), Tampa (South), Stonehill (East) and Columbus State (Southeast) round out the preseason regional favorites.

NCAA Division II Regional Championships will be held November 9 & 10..

USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by either a single member coach or by polling the region’s coaches (each region varies).
