Nichols, Kremer Crowned USA Marathon Trail Champions
MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo.- (August 18, 2013) - At the 58th running of the Pikes Peak Marathon, Alex Nichols and Stevie Kremer captured USA Marathon Trail Championship honors.
Nichols, who placed second overall in one of the closest races in the history of the event, was the first USA citizen and USATF member to the finish line and earned the title of USA Marathon Trail Champion.
The 28-year-old from Colorado Springs finished the race, which boasts 7800 feet of climbing from the start line to the summit of the 14,115-foot summit of Pikes Peak and then heads back to Manitou Springs where the race began - a 26-mile round trip - in a time of 3 hours, 43 minutes, 46 seconds. Japanese runner Toru Miyahara, 30, finished in 3:43:23.
Kremer, a 29-year-old from Crested Butte, Colo., recently returned to the United States after spending a year abroad in Italy. Her time in Europe included races on the international circuit. That experience and international competition certainly primed Kremer for a great effort at Pikes Peak.
She came close to breaking the long-standing course record for the marathon, 4:15:18, set in 1981, by Lynn Bjorklund. Kremer's finish time of 4:17:10 included the second fastest descent time recorded in the history of the marathon. Only
Gail LaDage Scott with a downhill time of 1:33:02 set in 1987, was faster than Kremer's 1:33:08.

38th Marine Corps Marathon Unveils Flatter Course
QUANTICO, Va. - The 38th Marine Corps Marathon (MCM)
course will feature a flatter course and a new approach to the U.S. Capitol. The notable chang e in course elevation occurs from Miles 6 through 9 with runners now travelling north on Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway to Beach Drive and then venturing back along the Parkway on roads that are relatively flat.
Previously, runners would turn left onto Canal Road after crossing the Key Bridge to Georgetown before scaling a 150-foot grade around the Georgetown Reservoir between Miles 7 and 8. The MCM course now will send runners immediately into the welcoming throngs of spectators along Georgetown's renowned M Street prior to entering Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway on a route that has not been part of the MCM course since 2006. The beautifully tree-lined Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway was developed in the 1920s and '30s and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
"This new course offers more spacious and flatter roadways for runners as they travel through National Park landscape and under historical bridges," says Rick Nealis, MCM Director.
"Georgetown, especially M Street, remains important to our runners and, annually, the hot spot for spectators and supporters."

USATF Recognizes High School Athletes in Honor Roll Program
USA Track & Field has launched a first-of-its kind program that recognizes and promotes high scho ol and cross country state champion teams, and their coaches, throughout the country.
The USATF Honor Roll honors state champions in track and field and cross country in each division and from all 50 states. Beginning with state track and field champions from earlier this spring, as part of the program, state team champions and the schools' principals will receive a personal letter from USATF CEO Max Siegel, a discount on an official USATF Honor Roll t-shirt or any other product at USATF's online store, and recognition on an interactive map on the newly designed web page www.usatf.org/HonorRoll. The interactive map provides a tool for track fans around the country to view all state championship teams through a single portal.
The USATF Honor Roll program and website are part of USATF's recently launched Future Stars program, an online resource for youth athletes.

Oyugi, Thomas Win 36th America's Finest City Half Marathon
SAN DIEGO - (August 18, 2013) - A sold-out field of more than 8,000 elite and recreational
runners from 46 states and 14 countries participated in the 36th edition of the America's Finest City Half Marathon and AFC 5K held Sunday under cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid-60s.
Cool conditions apparently suited a hot newcomer to U.S. road racing as well as other top competitors and mid-packers alike. Nelson Oyugi of Kenya, in just his second race ever on U.S. soil and his debut at the half-marathon distance, was victorious in the men's division, setting a new course record in 1 hour, 1 minute and 59 seconds.
It became a three-man race by mile three when Oyugi, Ernest Kebenei of Kenya and Tesfaye Alemayehu of Ethiopia began to distance themselves from any semblance of competition. Kebenei, who won 2009 event (1:04:01), was never more than a stride or two away from his countryman and Alemayehu, the defending AFC Half champion and 2011 runner-up, was never more than three seconds behind the 21-year-old Oygui.
The women's race was dominated by Wendy Thomas of Windsor, Colo., who clinched her win in a time of 1:13:15.
