The Warm-Up Lap: Meets of the Week, News and Notes for Apr. 12
April 12, 2013

NEW ORLEANS – Sprints, hurdles, jumps and throws take center stage this week as many of the country’s top-flight distance runners prepare for next week’s Mt. SAC Invitational and the beginning of conference championship season.

Arkansas is the host of the DI Meet of the Week with its John McDonnell Invitational, where a cluster of ranked teams and some Bowerman Watch-Listers will be in action.

DII’s Meet of the Week will take place in Canyon, Texas, at the West Texas A&M Invitational, where some impressive DII sprints and throws match-ups are on tap.

In stark contrast to the warm climes of the DI and DII meets, DIII’s Meet of the Week will take place in Plattesville, Wis., at the UW-Platteville Invitational, where both indoor champions will be in action.

Finally, catch up on some news and notes at the end, along with a summary of collegians leading the world and American rankings.

DIVISION I
Arkansas John McDonnell Invitational
April 13 | Full Schedule | Fayetteville, Ark. – John McDonnell Field | LIVE RESULTS

Ranked Teams (Men): No. 1 Texas A&M; 2. Arkansas; 15. Oklahoma; 22. Minnesota

Ranked Teams (Women): No. 1 Kansas; 3. Texas A&M; 12. Arkansas; 24. Oklahoma

Legendary Arkansas head coach John McDonnell won a staggering 40 NCAA Championships during his tenure with the Razorbacks track & field and cross country programs, so it is fitting that the meet named in his honor would feature both the No. 1 men’s and women’s programs in the USTFCCCA team rankings in Texas A&M and Kansas, respectively, and the indoor men’s champion Arkansas. Aside from Oklahoma, the cross country team champ, each of the programs represented at the meet enter with a ranked team on either the men’s or women’s side – or both – meaning Fayetteville, a city accustomed to great track & field meets, is likely in store for another.

Four members of the recently released Bowerman Watch List for April are slated to compete. Texas A&M’s Ameer Webb will compete at 100 meters and Tia Brooks of Oklahoma will continue her assault on the collegiate shot put record book, while decathlete Kevin Lazas will focus on the hurdles and discus. Kansas’ Andrea Geubelle, normally a horizontal jumper, is entered at 400 meters.

Most of the excitement on the women’s side will come from the sprints and throws. The race of the day could very well be the women’s 400, where indoor runner-up senior Regina George of Arkansas, current outdoor collegiate leader junior Sparkle McKnight of Arkansas and collegiate leader at 200 Kamaria Brown of Texas A&M will battle for the fastest time. George and McKnight are also scheduled to compete at 200 meters, where they’ll take on a field that includes top-seeded Paris Daniels of Kansas, No. 4 at 100 meters Ashley Collier of Texas A&M and 2012 indoor 400 champion Diamond Dixon of Kansas. A battle between seniors in the 100 hurdles is also promising as Donique’ Flemings of Texas A&M and Ivanique Kemp of Arkansas go head-to-head.

Brooks is seeded nearly 3½ meters ahead of the competition in the shot put, but any event with the all-time comprehensive collegiate record-holder is an event to watch. Freshman sensation Shelbi Vaughan of Texas A&M is likewise a heavy favorite in the discus — seeded more than 10 meters ahead of No. 2 — and likewise a must-see attraction as she continues to improve meet-by-meet.

The men’s meet is highlighted by the 200 meters race, where Akheem Gauntlett of Arkansas will make his 2013 outdoor debut. Gauntlett, always in the mix at the national level, will be challenged by a field of six sprinters seeded at 21.00 or faster. Webb will headline the 100 meters race.

Another promising race on the men’s side is at 800 meters, where Leoman Momoh, the fastest of the indoor season, will take on NCAA indoor finalists Harun Abda of Minnesota, and Tomas Squella and Patrick Rono of Arkansas. Oklahoma State’s Fabian Clarkson and Thomas Farrell, Arkansas’ Stanley Kebenei and Solomon Kebenei and Texas A&M’s Henry Lelei will combine for a potent 1500 race.

Indoor pole vault champ Andrew Irwin of Arkansas and javelin collegiate leader Sam Humphreys of Texas A&M highlight the field events.

DIVISION II MEET OF THE WEEK
West Texas A&M Invitational
Apr. 12-13 | Full Schedule | Canyon, Texas – Buffalo Sports Park

Ranked Teams (Men): No. 3 Adams State; 11. Abilene Christian; 28 .West Texas A&M

Ranked Teams (Women): No. 2 Adams State; 12. Abilene Christian; 22. West Texas A&M

With an eye toward next week’s Mt. SAC Invitational many of Adams State’s top distance runners are taking the week off from competition, giving the spotlight over to strong sprints and throws events at the West Texas A&M Invitational.

The 200 could be the event to watch on the men’s side. West Texas A&M’s Kenny Jackson is No. 4 in the division for 2013 at 20.93 (converted to 21.00 for altitude), and he’ll have to contend with 2012 Lone Star Conference Outstanding Male Track Athlete Jordan Geary, No. 10 Johnathan Farquarashon (21.16 to 21.23 for altitude) and Adams State’s Chaz Butler, who is No. 5 at 100 meters.

A top-10 showdown is slated for the men’s shot put, where Adams State’s Wesley Lavong and West Texas A&M’s Zach Weatherly are both in the top-10 of the division. Lavong enters as the top-ranked of the two at No. 6 with a mark of 55-7¾ (16.96m), just ahead of Weatherly at No. 10 with a throw of 55-1 (16.79m).

The event with the largest number of top-30 performers is the women’s javelin with five of the division’s 30 best for 2013. Tanesha Blair of West Texas A&M is No. 5 in DII with a throw of 151-2 (46.07m), followed by No. 11 Ameilia Mitchell of Abilene Christian (142-0/43.33m), No. 21 Michelle Traynham of New Mexico Highlands (135-5/41.29m), No. 24 Kirsten McCowan of West Texas A&M (133-10/40.80m) and No. 26 Laura Grube of Eastern New Mexico (133-2/40.60m).

The top three collegiate women at 200 meters are separated by two-tenths of a second in terms of seeded time, and are all ranked within the top 30 of the 2013 outdoor rankings. Abilene Christian’s Shennae Steele is No. 9 at 24.02, while West Texas A&M’s Sarah Snider and Bri Leeper are No. 16 (24.48 to 24.55 for altitude) and No. 20 (24.56 to 24.63 for altitude), respectively.

The hotbed of DIII track & field action this weekend is undoubtedly chilly Platteville, Wis., where a combined eight ranked teams will compete at the UW-Platteville Invitational. Both indoor champs from the 2013 season, the No. 4 UW-La Crosse men and No. 2 UW-Oshkosh women, will battle it out for outdoor state supremacy and for position in the National Team Computer Rankings.

Four of the top six men’s teams and two of the top eight women’s are slated to compete, giving this early-season meet the feeling of one much later in the season. In terms of student-athletes, the meet is a who’s-who of some of the top DIII talent in the country.

UW-Oshkosh will debut USTFCCCA Indoor National Women’s Track Athlete of the Year Christy Cazzola for the first time in the outdoor season at 800 meters, as well as send its top throwers in Pete Delzer and Nick Baatz. UW-Stevens Point’s Dan Sullivan — the DIII USTFCCCA Indoor National Men’s Track Athlete of the Year — will take part in both the 800 and 5000.
