No. 12 Bruins Top No. 10 LSU and TCU Wruck sets school record for the third week in a row

Los Angeles, Calif. - No. 12 UCLA men's double dual victory over No. 10 LSU and TCU, the No. 18 Bruin women's dual win over TCU and world, U. S. and collegiate Top 10 marks highlighted the 11th annual Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Track & Field Invitational held Saturday at Drake Stadium.

In men's collegiate triple dual scoring, the No. 12 Bruin men defeated No. 10 LSU, 106-56 and TCU, 120-41 and LSU defeated TCU, 88-54. In women's collegiate triple dual scoring, the No. 18 Bruins defeated TCU, 112-49, lost to No. 7 LSU, 92-70 and LSU defeated TCU, 111-42. There were 19 events each for men and women and scoring was five points for first place, three for second and one point for third, except for the relay events (five points for the winner only).

Men's Collegiate Competition

For the third consecutive week, UCLA junior discus thrower Julian Wruck set the school record, current world best and meet records with his mark of 216-8. Two weeks ago, Wruck originally broke John Godina's school mark (213-0, 1995) with his 213-5 at the Texas State Elite meet. Then last week at the Texas Relays, he again set the UCLA record with a 216-7.

On the track, UCLA picked up eight points in the 800m (first-place freshman Alex Monsiviaiz, personal best/UCLA-TCU meet record 1:49.65; second-place sophomore Philip Kostelnik, personal-best 1:50.95). In the 1500m, UCLA placed first-through-seventh (nine points), with redshirt freshman Lane Werley finishing first (3:44.79, personal-best/RJ-JJK meet record).

In the 3000m, UCLA placed first-through-fourth (nine points), with sophomore Dustin Fay placing first (8:16.66). The Bruins also picked up nine points in the 3000m steeplechase, with senior David McDonald finishing first (9:10.67, UCLA-TCU meet record).

In field events, Bruin two-time All-American junior Michael Woepse won the pole vault (17-6.50, UCLA-LSU meet record), freshman Nicholas Scarvelis placed first in the shot put (personal-best 59-4.25) and three-time All-American junior Alec Faldermeyer won the hammer throw (208-1). The Bruins picked up eight points in the javelin with sophomore Derek Eager placing first (218-03).

Throughout the meet there were outstanding men's marks from both collegiate and unattached competitors. In the 200m, LSU's Aaron Ernest's winning time of 20.78 is No. 2 on the current college list. LSU's Quincy Downing's first-place time of 46.27 in the 400m is No. 2 on the current collegiate list and HSI's Yousef Ahmed's mark of 45.67 is currently No. 2 in the world. In the 800m, Bruin alum Brandon Johnson's time of 1:47.66 is the national leader. In the 110m hurdles, Nike's Jason Richardson's time of 13.47 is No. 4 in the world. UCLA alum Yoo Kim, the South Korea national record holder and two-time Olympian, had the top mark in the pole vault (18-00.50).

Women's Collegiate Competition

In the 100m, UCLA sophomore Kylie Price had the winning time, a personal-best 11.60 and placed second in the 200m (24.01). In the 1500m, senior Sarah Toberty won with a personal-best mark of 4:23.62, a UCLA-LSU and UCLA-TCU meet record. Bruin sophomore indoor All-American Brea Buchanan finished second in the 100m hurdles, with a lifetime best 13.26, tied for No. 10 on the UCLA all-time list and a UCLA-TCU meet record.

In the 400m hurdles, two-time Bruin senior All-American Turquoise Thompson's winning mark of 56.16 is currently No. 2 in the world, the fastest time in college and UCLA-LSU and UCLA-TCU meet records.

In field events, the Bruins swept the pole vault, scoring nine points, with junior Natasha Kolbo placing first (13-0.25). UCLA senior indoor All-American Allison Koressel passed on the four opening heights and failed on three attempts at 13-0.25. Price, an indoor All-American in the long jump, placed second in the event (20-00.25). In the hammer throw, UCLA junior two-time All-American Ida Storm placed first, with a first attempt of 205-01 but then fouling on her next four throws.

Throughout the day there were top women's world, national and collegiate efforts in both track and field events. In the 400m, Keshia Baker's overall best time of 52.09 is No. 4 in the current world rankings. LSU's Natoya Goule's winning time of 2:01.08 in the 800m is a current world leader and LSU school record. In the 100m hurdles, LSU's Jasmin Stowers' winning mark of 13.07 is No. 2 in the current world rankings. In the 400m hurdles, Jamaica's Shevon Stoddart's mark of 56.46 is No. 3 in current world standings.

In the 4 X 100m relay, the top overall mark by the Nike `A' relay, with Carmelita Jeter running the second leg, was 43.57, the current fifth fastest time in the world. Jeter won three sprint medals for the U. S. at the 2012 Olympics. LSU's 4 X 400m relay, with Goule running anchor, set a UCLA-LSU meet record with a winning time of 3:34.94.

In field events, in the pole vault, Bruin alumna Katy Viuf had the best overall height of 14-03.25. In the long jump, Tori Bowie, the 2011 NCAA long champ champion from Southern Mississippi, had the overall top effort of 21-10.25, No. 2 in current world rankings and a RJ/JJK meet record. In the javelin, current Bruin volunteer assistant coach Sharon Day, a 2012 U. S. Olympian in the heptathlon, had the second-best throw with a mark of 144-01.

Looking Ahead

On Saturday, April 13, the Bruins will compete at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.
