BERKELEY - The Cal track & field team kicks off the month of April with a home meet featuring three of the top public universities in the country when Michigan and Virginia come to Edwards Stadium to challenge the Golden Bears Saturday. Action begins with the hammer throw at 9:30 a.m., with running events starting at 12 noon.

According to the most recent public college rankings by U.S. News & World Report, Cal is rated the No. 1 nationally, with Virginia third and Michigan fourth. Earlier this year, all three schools met in the Panorama Farms Invitational near Virginia's home in Charlottesville during the cross country season, and the coaches are planning to make the competitions a regular occurrence.

For the Bears, they will be hosting a two- or three-team scored team competition (other than the Big Meet) for the first time in more than a decade. In Saturday's meet, points will be awarded for first through sixth place in individual events and first through third in relays.

The Cal-Michigan-Virginia triangular is one of four scored meets on the West Coast this week. Others are the Oregon Pepsi Team Invitational, the Jim Click Shootout at Arizona, and a tri-meet at UCLA with LSU and TCU.

In the latest individual performance lists, Cal sports 13 marks that are among the top 25 in the country, including three in the top 10 - Hammed Suleman (2nd, men's triple jump, 53-4.75), Kelsey Santisteban (7th, women's 5000m, 15:52.06) and Ray Stewart (8th, men's 110m hurdles, 13.67w). Suleman's mark was the best for the Bears in the triple jump in 18 seasons, while Santisteban moved into the third position on Cal's all-time performer chart. Stewart, who is back from a knee injury that kept him out all of 2012, owns a PR of 13.48 from his victory at the 2011 Pac-10 Championships.
