NASCAR Drivers Will Run Daytona Beach Half Marathon


DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Prior to turning two high-speed qualifying laps in Daytona 500 Qualifying Presented By Kroger, several NASCAR drivers will first compete in the fifth Daytona Beach Half Marathon, which will start and end at historic Daytona International Speedway.


The Central Florida Sports Commission and Daytona International Speedway, in partnership with Volusia County, will host the Daytona Beach Half Marathon on Sunday, Feb. 17, just one week before the 55th running of "The Great American Race" - the Daytona 500.



Among the NASCAR drivers that have submitted applications to compete in the Daytona Beach Half Marathon are five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson, two-time Daytona 500 champion Michael Waltrip, Kasey Kahne and Aric Almirola.

Runner's World Event Earns Environmental Honor



PORTLAND, Ore. - The
Runner's World Half Marathon & Festival, held in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, October 19-21, 2012, has earned silver certification from the Council for Responsible Sport. The Half Marathon & Festival becomes the first large running event in the U.S. to achieve such status in its launch year.



"We are proud to receive Silver Certification in our inaugural year of the Runner's World Half Marathon and Running Festival," said David Willey, SVP/Editor-in-Chief of
Runner's World, published by Rodale Inc."It's important to reduce the environmental impact of road races, bringing runners together to celebrate our sport in a way that is as sustainable as possible. Our staff and our partners hope to become even greener at the next Runner's World Half in October."

When Hawks Win, So Do Publix Georgia Marathon Runners

ATLANTA - US Road Sports & Entertainment Group, owners and operators of the Publix Georgia Marathon, has announced a sponsorship agreement with the NBA's Atlanta Hawks. The partnership will bring a unique and fun way for those interested in registering for the Publix Georgia Marathon to receive a discount based on the outcome of two Hawks home games during February.

For each Hawks home victory from Wednesday, February 6 through Friday, February 8, 2013, registrants will receive a discount equal to the total number of Hawks points in excess of the opposing team's score. For example, if the Hawks win by 12, runners will receive $12 off registration cost. The discount will be valid between the hours of noon and 11:59 p.m. ET the day following the win and registrants will use the discount code PGMHAWKS13.

Flanagan, Derrick Claim USA Cross Country Titles





ST. LOUIS - Shalane Flanagan (above, USATF photo) used her superior strength to pull away from the rest of the women's open field while Chris Derrick bested a loaded men's open race as each claimed USA Cross Country titles Saturday, Feb. 2 at Forest Park.


In addition to awarding national championships for competitors in men's and women's junior, open and masters competition, spots on Team USA
for the World Cross Country Championships, scheduled for Sunday, March 24 in Bydgoszcz, Poland, were also on the line for the top six finishers in the junior and senior races. Complete results from Saturday's races can be found here


Emily Stites and Oklahoma State's
Craig Nowak also claimed national titles in junior competition as competitors battled steady breezes and temperatures in the 30s throughout the day.
